To be honest, I need more background information. Are you seeking employment in Information Technology? Networking? Programming? What computer or programming experience do you have? I ask this because you will have to rely upon past experience to compete against younger candidates. In the meantime, visit the source link I posted.

p.s. I'm 55 and in-between jobs so I understand what you are dealing with.
Reply:Flash is pretty good to know for web development, but I don't know if its that important for a career. Databases will always be important to the world, and there must be a baseline demand for administrators out there. Web development is a hit or miss job, and I personally wouldn't throw much weight behind that when there are 12 year olds doing it for free all day long.

Either way, you need to focus on a decision and stick with it. It will take some time to make yourself marketable in any new profession.
Reply:The answer really depends on what type of person you are, and what you like to do. Web development tends to involve more creativity and design, where database operations involve heavy logic and architecture (data) skills. There is alot of demand for web programmers, but there are also alot of people learning to do web development, so there will be more competition for jobs. Database development doesn't normally appeal to younger people because it is behind the scenes work, and doesn't deal with graphics, images, etc, but instead on code, syntax, and data structure. So, the best answer is to go with what you like best. If you are good at what you do in IT, and you like it, you will be able to get a job, no matter what it is. My advice is to learn one well, but become at least somewhat proficient in the other. I have found that companies really like someone who is versatile. Good luck.

Reply:You need to learn computer technology in general. But, to get a job at your age, the best thing to do is to go for web development backed up by database administration. that should cover all the bases and with that you can start your own consultant business and not have to rely on someone else's job.
