Are qualifications required for web developers to get a job or is simple software knowledge enough?

I am thinking of doing a diploma in web development, but am wondering will I need to for an entry level job. Could I teach myself web development and showcase some of my work to an employer and this be enough. Just wanting some opinions.

Will I be wasting my time by doing a diploma in web development?

Are qualifications required for web developers to get a job or is simple software knowledge enough?
A diploma is seldomly a waste of time. Understand that while every employer is different, and there are no laws mandating a degree, most employers will require one unless you have an abundance of relevant experience. You could teach yourself, but where would you work to gain experience to offset the need for the degree? Additionally, a degree is transferrable, is seldomly questioned, and lasts forever where your experience may be questioned especially if it's through an internship or working for yourself and if it isn't recent it may not be accepted.

Best/creative ways to get customers (cheaply) for web development business?

I work for a small yet top-heavy (I have 3 bosses - and the company is only 7 employees including them) marketing services firm as a web developer. I have various skills %26amp; experience including design and programming. I am frustrated at how much money I generate for the company yet how little I get paid, so am seriously considering starting my own firm that would provide web development and mobile development services. I've got some clients already due to side projects, but am nervous about generating enough work to stay afloat especially having a wife %26amp; 2 young kids at home. Really I'm not dependent on my current employer for anything besides salary, especially given the fact that we already pay for our own (expensive) health insurance. I've always wanted to start my own company and am feeling that now is the time. We're already poor, so how much worse could it be. :-)

My question is, what would be some creative, effective, yet cheap ways to generate some business for myself?

Best/creative ways to get customers (cheaply) for web development business?
I've been doing web sites and web design/ programming for the past year. I've been in the industry for the past 11 years (making a lot of money for other people). Marketing my skill set on Craigslist has been highly effective.

You can go about it several different ways.

1)You can post your resume. But you will end up with full-time job offers if you do this.

2) you can post your skills in either creative services or computer services

3) you can set up an rss feed in your area of expertise and respond to jobs as they come on the posting board daily.

I would also recommend setting up a simple web page that lists your skills and has portfolio samples of your work. I began the year in need of work, now I have much more than I can take on. Good luck!

the following is my very simple portfolio page. I would recommend something similar. I think designers have the tendency to go overboard. http://www.utahstories.com/about_markosi...
Reply:There are very many cheap advertising on the net. You can try free classifieds. (Try a Google search for "free classifieds" or "free classifieds india".)

Or become a member of http://www.trafficswarm.com or http://www.ts25.com or http://www.webbizinsider.com (these sites generate tons of traffic to your site. Become a member of those sites. You can promote your business worldwide)

More traffic means more business. However, I am of the idea that free classifieds would work better. Once you make some money, then go for Premium Ad on the very same classified.

What's hot right now, Visual Basic, Java or Web Development?

i prefer the combination of java and web development.

What's hot right now, Visual Basic, Java or Web Development?
Any field can be hot for you, if you become the master of that. Its true if you learn Java and web development then its good, but if you can do quality works with VB then it will also be hot, coz there is always need of quality works...
Reply:I would have to say Java and Web Development are hot. The field is crowded with VB developers.
Reply:I agree that all of them are pretty hot right now, and if you are really good at any language, chances are you will easily find a job. I would suggest thinking about what you like to do the most - whether it is hard core coding, or more design and layout stuff. If you are more into the hardcore stuff, then I would learn Java, VB, or C#. If you are more interested in doing web stuff, I would probably focus more on PHP, JavaScript, ASP, or other similar languages. If you are more interested in the design and appearance, you may want to pick up Flash programming. Or, if you are total geek (like me) and don't care to ever see humans (jk), you could even pick up database programming, like SQL, and flavors of it like PL/SQL, or T-SQL. The programming field is getting pretty hot again - I get multiple calls and emails every week on my resume' on CareerBuilder.
Reply:Out of those 3 it has to be Java. VB isn't used in too many professional applications and Web Development is actually done a lot of the time in Java. Also, the nice thing about Java is that once you learn it it's like knowing 3 languages. Anyone who understands Java should be able to transition back to C, C++, or C# without much trouble.

What makes the best web design / development company the best?

I would argue that the process a web design company takes and the skill sets of the people involved in that process is what makes a good web design company become the best. How long the company has been in business and the success it’s been able to bring to its clients, are equally important.

This is a an article I wrote on the subject of good web design and development process http://blog.9thsphere.com/blog/?p=18

What makes the best web design / development company the best?
Since 85% of Internet users rely on search engines to find goods and services, it is essential that every business promote their business via a published domain named website on major search engines such as Google.com, Yahoo.com %26amp; MSN.com. These major search engines are the Yellow Pages for all business which can be reached by anyone having an Internet connection.

Begin by publishing your website's domain name for FREE at Google's search directory, visit "http://google.com/addurl/?continue=/add... and fill-in the form. In another way, Google, Yahoo or MSN provide a Yellow Pages kind of advertisement for every website according to a set of ranking protocols. And there's where web designers and search engine optimizers play an critical role in marketing websites which in turn, display goods and services to be discovered [via search directories] by the rest of the world. The greater the appearance or presence that one's website can generate on search directories, the greater number of customers will accordingly visitor one's website.

As for the cost to market one's website via the Internet and more particularly -- search directories, will depend initially with the proper design of webpages and the proper placement of metatags which are: %26lt;Title%26gt;, %26lt;Description%26gt; and %26lt;Keywords%26gt;.

A searchable %26lt;Title%26gt; would be "[name of the goods/services - a generic domain name is okay unless you own a well-know brand], [city], [state - postal abbreviation]" -- up to 65 characters and spaces. The %26lt;Description%26gt; would be up to 20 words comprising a complete readable sentence which promotes interest in your business, i.e., "We sell quality _____ at a reasonable price, etc." And %26lt;keywords%26gt; would consist of 12-15 compound plural words separated by commas, i.e., "cars, planes, transportation, etc."

In conclusion, webpages can either be rather straightforward using only HTML text or be crafted totally as a graphic Flash configuration. Either way, care should be taken to complete the Properties entries for Title, Description and Keywords so that there is something that search robots can index. The more one is educated in crafting effective webpages along with metatag placement, the less will be spent to hire third-party consultants to assist you in this matter.

To demonstrate how search engines/directories work, go to Yahoo.com and type in the following search query: "pizza downtown los angeles." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query which means you want to order a "pizza" from "downtown" and in what city -- "Los Angeles." Sounds fairly simple and then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.3 million search results and among the top Five rankings will be a business called "Pizza Next Door, etc." The significance of this demonstration is to illustrate that most Interest shoppers will discover "Pizza Next Door," forthright because of its high web presence and ranking within the Top Five. So these shoppers are more or less likely to patronize this pizza establishment and hopefully in the long term; validate the owner and his family as having a profitable Internet enterprise.

To further illustrate how one can achieve a TOP 10 page ranking on Google.com, type in the following search query: "ecommerce tutorials seo." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query. Then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.44 million search results and among the TOP 10 rankings will be a website called "Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles."

Good luck!

Looking for Online Web Design & Development (IT) Programs offering Bachelors and Masters?

I am a professional working full-time, therefore a brick and mortar school is out of the question. I often work late hours and need to find a regionally accredited university offering a bachelors degree in web development and design. I would like to eventually obtain a master's degree in this particular area of IT, however, I have heard some not so good things about Kaplan University. I recently had a bad experience with an admissions advisor and would like to know if anyone knows of a brick and mortar school that has an online degree program in the above referenced areas of interest. I have been searching for months and thought Kaplan was my best choice but I would like to know if there are other options available before going further in debt. Please keep in mind that I already have a BA degree from MU in Missouri.

Looking for Online Web Design %26amp; Development (IT) Programs offering Bachelors and Masters?
Kaplan is a good one.Don't care about what people say. I am getting my master's degree online. Talk to an admissions advisor from Kaplan. They are very nice and they will help you out. They won't bother you again if you say no. I guarantee you. You can even do an online chat with an advisor from theri website. Good luck!

Whats the tax liability of Indian web development Co. doing outsourced work from USA? How to receive money?

Is there any restriction in receiving money from USA in India? How much can I receive for doing software/web development?

No export license is required. However,it can be governed by RBI regulations as above. And if the Unit wants to avail income tax sops it may have to work as STPI/SEZ Unit.Refer to www.allindiantaxes.com for details
Reply:http://www.surveyspaysu.com?id=114153
Reply:You will need to look to the US-India tax treaty. Generally the US will impose an income tax on earnings that arise from US businesses; however, in many cases this tax requires a physical presence or "branch" to be in the US. The question then is whether your computer servers can be considered a US presence (or, alternatively, if you are actually in the US for any part of the year).... To answer that you need to look to your operations, to see what activities you conduct here (as set out in the treaty).

Your clients may have to withhold applicable taxes from payments to you in some circumstances (again, read the treaty).

As for a sales tax, these laws vary from state to state. Generally you do not have to pay these taxes to states as long as your operations are 100% online (the federal government has imposed a moratorium on internet taxes).

The best solution is to hire a US accountant to tell you exactly what you need to do. You can probably find someone do provide this service for next to nothing.

Im learning Web Development...maybe??

i have been doing website stuff for a while, basically just from spending 100's hours on my pc. Ive read HTML books and many more. All the stuff i find tells me how to do stuff but dosent really explain why it all works! They say its a "mark up" languages, but never explain what that is, whats a framework?, whats syntax?, what are javascript libraries? These are some of the things i want to learn to have a solid foundation in web development. 9 out of 10 times i can get things to work, but i dont know why they work! Can i get opinions on wheres the best place to START! Basically i need step 1. Thanks.

Im learning Web Development...maybe??
Its sad to hear, that you have allready done the same mistake, as i did when i first started out.

Reading books on certain topics can be a good thing, however when it comes to web-design, it is a complete waste of time, why? Well its simple really, you would want the copy/paste function anabled.

Typing in all the different examples in the books by hand, can take quite some time; having the copy/paste function at your disposal, will allow you to focus your time on more important stuff.

---MarkUp---

Is pretty much self-explanatory, in that it means "marked up stuff", you will "mark up stuff", and you apply style to it through CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

---Syntax---

Is basically the "rules" of a language. PHP for instance; get the syntax wrong, and the code most likely won't work.

For instance, if you don't understand Danish, and i suddenly started speaking Danish to you, thrat wouldn't get my point through, unless you where somehow blessed in the moment now, would it?

---libraries---

These are like a collection of pre-made functions and such, which should (and usually will), make it easier, and faster to develop applications and/or websites, you can even make your own libraries.

---Website's---

Below i've inserted some websites for you to read, understanding how things work, and why they work, comes with experiance, the more experiance you gather, the more you understand how things work.

Web development is a broad term that incorporates all areas of developing a Web site for the World Wide Web. This can include graphical Web design, actual coding of pages, backend programming, and Web server configuration. However, among web professionals, Web development usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building Web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding.

How to install SVN for web development (dev sites/live sites)?

I was looking into installing subversioning onto my linux dedicated server. I do web development on it and would like to not only use the box as a central repository, but also set it up so that from that repository, I can easily move content to a development sites as well as live sites.

Basically the development sites would be mirrors of the final committed files in the repository. Then the live sites would be updated to reflect the content of the development sites when triggered somehow.

Any tips on the best way to do this? I already have SVN installed on my server. Just need to know the next steps to get things set up.

How to install SVN for web development (dev sites/live sites)?
Look into using SVN hooks to do the dirty work.

have your website root be a checkout of your repository - then after you have a good change that you want to move to live commit it to the repository and the SVN hook for post-commit can run an update on the website root which will update your live site.

Make sure the perms of your website root and the svn repo are the same as the user your are running as, also not root

What do you suggest : leanring web development or computer programming ?

Hi , my question has two parts , first part is :

between software programming ( developing computer softwares ) and web developing .. what do you suggest to learn depending on :

* Time needed to master the chosen one.

* Market need for the chosen one.

* income expected from the chosen one.

Second part :

I really really LOVE web development , but I felt into this maze because I don't see much to expect from working as a web developer .. Do web developers work only on their computers !! or they have to attend a company at the early morning like all empolyees ..!!

the real question- for this part - is : what path should I follow to master web developing and related technologies ( like security , I think it can help ,and Oracle database ..etc %26lt;%26lt; important to answer please :) %26lt;%26lt; I meant , the related technologies )

Thank you !! :)

What do you suggest : leanring web development or computer programming ?
There's potentially more money in application programming than web-based programming. However, there are potentially more job opportunities in web-based programming.

I would say, maintain as wide a skillset as possible, but focus on what you prefer - seems to be web-based programming.

Good luck.
Reply:I would learn one first, in your case...I would get web design down. There are typically more web engineer/development jobs than software engineer. Either one can probably "work from home" but its up to the company, not you. Some of the main highlights of websites I have seen have utilized: php, sql, asp and so on. You dont see many company/corporate sites use just html anymore. HTML is almost a thing of the past as new features on the web start getting used.

I would then focus on software programming, depending on what language you are using (Im a VB guy), you can probably find something good job wise depending on what you use and your knowledge level. Sometimes you have to be able to make a software program access web databases so you need to know the both of best worlds!

Which monitor should I buy for Web Development? Samsung 30" or 2 x Hanns-G 28"?

I am looking at purchasing a monitor(s):

1. 30" Samsung SyncMaster 305T with 2560x1600 Resolution

$1230 + $25 Shipping = $1255

vs

2. 2 x 28" Hanns-G 281DPB with 1920x1200 x 2 = 3840 x 1200 Total Resolution

$500 (shipping free) x 2 monitors = $1000

My main purpose is for Web Development, dealing mainly with Web Programming, Graphics (Photoshop) / Animations (Flash), and a little Audio/Video.

I know that If I get the 30" I can maximize the Code Pages longer from 1200 (28" monitor) to 1600 (30") Resolution.

But De,aling with Graphics %26amp; Audio/Video I can can benefit from using 2x28" monitor to give me 3840 (width) resolution vs 2560 (width) on a 30" monitor.

Please help me decide, which to buy. Thanks

Is the quality of web development comparable if I outsourced it to India or some other country outside the US?

I need to get a website developed and someone recommended using Guru.com or Rentacoder.com. They seem to be far cheaper, but I'm not sure if they can do a competent job. Also, I'm on a very limited budget. That's why I'm seriously contemplating getting it developed outside the US. Any advice or experience with this?

Is the quality of web development comparable if I outsourced it to India or some other country outside the US?
My associate specializes in this sort of field, he can do your website in a short amount of time. He likes to move quickly, 30% down payment, 7-10 day turnaround. He does a magnificent job for much less then standard web developers, his work in my opinion is brilliant and is not that expensive.

If you are serious about this I can send you his contact information, and he can get on the job right away. Let me know.

Send me an email, with your answer.

I hope we can help you resolve this quickly, Good Luck.
Reply:User Rent A Coder because you don' t pay until yo are 100% satisfied wid the work being done.... Right now I'm getting my site redesigned using RAC because I don't have the time... and I'm not even paying $25.
Reply:First of all never pay any freelancer afront. Pay only after job is completed and you are satisfied with the work. Check freelance websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/
Reply:I myself is a web developer.

I suggest don't go through any sites, as they are far more costlier. As compared to these sites, its better to search for a web developer on your own via contacts. Or you can put on a free Ad on the web.

As compared to other countries, I feel India has good number of web developers who work from offshore (as part-time) which actually makes them work for cheap.
Reply:All depends on what functionality you want or need in your website. I expect a simple, good looking site can be created by just about anybody.

But, I've personally had poor experiences with offshore work. I've seen abominable code vulnerable to common SQL injection attacks, I've seen mistakes like not enclosing in quotes resulting in labels becoming executable code, more.

In all those cases, stuff "works" but I've either sent the project back to be re-done or advised others of numerous really bad flaws which may not be apparent to a non-technical person but is juicy to a hacker looking to compromise the website.

Are you a do-it-yourselfer? If you are, what would you think about building your own website by simply snapping in code others have created for cheap or free? And if you could change the appearance of an entire website simply by applying a "theme" with a click?

If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, check out any of the ready-made portal frameworks... like Dotnetnuke, Drupal, Rainbow, etc.

If you'd like to see what you can do to customize your website, check out the many choices available at http://www.snowcovered.com
Reply:I'm sure you get excellent quality, but possibly poor support. And many Americans boycott out of country outsourcing.

Studying Web Design and Web Development?

Can I study in the US both together or do I have to finish one and later start the other?

I want to study a bachelor of both but I don't know if I have to study 4 years of web design and later 4 years of web development or both at the same time. I don't mind waiting 8 years but I don't know if is possible to study both in just 4 years. I don't want to study an associate's degree.

I have never done a website before (I always try to but never knew much) but I just love looking at different websites everyday and their designs and I always have ideas of how I want to do mine too and this is what I want to do as my future career.

I want to design websites plus controlling where the next page will go after you click an images (I think that's what a web developer do). ^ ^

For those that studied both, what did you do?

**I'm not good being creative when I draw (but I'm good at looking!). Do I have to study an asso/bache of arts before I study both?

Please help me and thanks!

Studying Web Design and Web Development?
Currently I am working on a bachelor's degree for IT/Web Design. Because Web Design isn't a big degree plan, most schools don't offer a bacherlor's in Web Design only. (that's what I was trying to do at first).

Right now, web design and web development are intertwined into my degree plan. There are many many schools that do this.

Someone mentioned above that there are many sites that teach this in just a few months. That is true, however, that's only really good if you want to freelance. Most businesses are asking for atleast a bachelor's degree now to design for them.

I have to tell you that I like taking IT as well. It makes web design easier to learn. There are many different areas of computers that are incorporated with Web Design that if you do find a school that offers web design only courses, you are at a disadvantage.

Some of my previous IT classes have been programming and advanced programming languages. This helps so so much when working with some web design techniques.

Really, you get what you pay for when you go to school for both.

If you want to try some online classes at a University I recommend Kaplan University or University of Phoenix. Both schools offer bachelor's degrees in IT/web design.

♥ Happy Designing!
Reply:You sound like you really want to do this but I'm afraid that it might be boring for you.

Web Developers have to know the most common languages in use to day they would be...

Databases like Oracle or SQL(My, Portage, Lite, etc).

Scripting languages like PHP, Ruby, Perl, ASP, etc...

Markup Languages like HTML, XHTML, WML, SXL, etc

In order to be a good designer you need to know how to work with the above languages.

There isn't alot of drawing in web development cause there will always come a time when you have to put aside programs like DreamWeaver or NVU and code by hand to achieve the desired results.

About the part on finding work...

There are a lot of people doing web design so trying to find a job is difficult. You can either work for a company and be told to do a site or go freelance and then wait for work to come.

I didn't mention all the hacking you will have to be doing to achieve browser compatibility.

I don't know about degrees cause I'm self taught but 4 years for all this junk is a waste of money in my opinion. You can learn everything there is to learn online.
Reply:there are many free sites that will teach you both web design and web development in a few months not years
Reply:Just go to a local community college and learn there, it will save you money compared to a 4 year school and you'll learn just as much if not more.

Here is a book that can help you learn the basics.

I have seen requirements for a Computer Science Degree, but isn't a Computer Info Systems degree close enough, or maybe a tech school that teaches programming and databases.

I really dont think its as difficult as people make it out to be, I have worked with Visual Studio and building test apps for fun.

What would be the best route to take, but also the quickest and cheapest, I am willing to work anywhere to start, and I already have 2 yrs of college, but dont know quite how to transition into this.

I believe WEB APP DEV is a part of every corporation, and everything will continue to push towards the web with software development

Any thoughts from professionals.

Radio/TV stations & Web Development Jobs/Careers?

Looking for some insight on the radio industry and the station websites.

I have seen some radio companies post jobs for on-air dj and a webmaster in one position,

is this a career or just a job for a student.

Every station has their own website thats uppdated daily, so thats where the web design/graphic/design/coding come in play, but how can you do both, and if so how much will they pay you?

Seems to me thats a pretty stable job, just announce whats going on on air daily and update it online,

Also are they're other web development/IT/graphic design positions in the radio industry , maybe even the TV industry.

These sites are updated daily by someone, but no one really thinks about working for a radio or TV station when in school, usually only the big stale corporations.

Radio and TV will never go away, and the online presence just supports them.

Any thoughts or people working in new media within the radio/TV field would be helpful

Thanks

Any thoughts

Radio/TV stations %26amp; Web Development Jobs/Careers?
I'd say go for it, but don't be shocked by the low pay and the long hours when your first start out. You may also be working weekends, holidays, or overnights. You also can be fired for most any reason...from being 'smarter' than your boss, to blowing a big posting, to trying to hit on the receptionist. I've also heard, and seen people canned for everthing from pronouncing something wrong on the air, to rival stations hiring someone away from a station...after getting them fired or blackballed. It is a cutthroat business.

If you really want to get a good idea, get cleaned up, and set an appointment to check out a tv or radio station. Ask the receptionist, or HR person if there is someone who could give you a tour. Broadcasting or Journalism may have 'new media' but still has 'old school rules'...meaning, you pay your dues, regardless of race, color or creed.

It 'seems' easy...until you have to do it. Then, you get amazed at how much coordination it takes to write, or even cover a news story. Even those in 'new media' have to have the same instincts of regular news folks when they put stuff on line.

However, its something that you have to experience...and, to me, if you are young, you should go for your dreams. If you don't, you'll kick yourself on down the road for not attempting it.

World Record in Web Development?

Is it a record ? Is it world record in web development ?

Aayushman Sharma 12 years old has made a website www.EngineersDay.info in record time of 12 minutes total time i.e. time from domain registration, hosting, setting a database website and first message post.

World Record in Web Development?
What a load of rubbish.

That isn't building a website, that's just using other peoples tools to get a web presence.

Where did a 12 year old get a credit card from to register the domain name?
Reply:I don't know if it's a world record, but if you use a good hosting site, anyone should be able to do that with a bit of practice I would think.

Degree Question about Web Development?

What type of degree should a person aim for a career within Web Development and Designing

Degree Question about Web Development?
As such no degree is required to become a Web Developer or Web Designer. You should have good knowledge of related technologies.

For web designing, you should have good knowledge of various designing softwares like flash, dreamweaver, macromedia, animation etc

For web development you should know programming language like php, dot net or java along with database like oracle,mysql,sql-server,msaccess etc..

In addition to above you should have good analytical skills too..

But reputed companies do prefer a candidate with a bachelor or masters degree in computer or engineering.....
Reply:depends on your college, but a degree in art would be enough. Specialize in design elements or publication.

Urgent help about ASP.NET or WEB DEVELOPMENT?

have been debating myself on how %26amp; where to start?

I am 49 years old and I need to start where I can get a job

quickly. I check Linux/Unix well they all require 4 to 6 years of experience in order to consider you. Meaning if I learn linux nobody will hire me. I look at SQL Server DBa same thing , even if I get a certifications my chances at 49 without any experience are slim to get into that field. I was thinking about ASP.NET and the Web Development in general. What do you guys will recommend me to at least get my feet into the field?? After that I will learn more but I need to get in. Thanks for your recommendations guys.

Urgent help about ASP.NET or WEB DEVELOPMENT?
I would suggest ASP .NET, PHP, and ColdFusion. I am a certified ColdFusion developer. As much as I hate to admit it, ASP .NET and PHP are more popular than ColdFusion these days. So, you can try ASP .NET and PHP.

Once you have learned enough of these skills, you can go to some freelance web project web site like www.guru.com and try to do some project as a test to your own skill. At the same time, you can also go look for a job. This way, you will have some income by doing freelance jobs while waiting for a permanent job.
Reply:Thanks for selecting my answer as the best answer Report It

Reply:Start here.

Start with html

Then JavaScript.

You can do visual basic (VBScript) too but I consider it old hat. It is used though.

The rest is up to you.
Reply:I suggest that you start web developing with ASP.NET 2.0. Remember that I mentioned .net 2.0, because Microsoft has made it very very easy for developers to learn and use it in order to design and develop professional web sites. Using this technology, web app development needs less coding and is more fun. Even working with Data has become extremely fine and DEVELOPER-FRIENDLY!! Don't miss the chance.

Post your website on your business cards, and/or try to get some local advertisement such as newspapers and local publications. Make some promotional materials advertising your website, keychains, pins, t-shirts, etc. Before you do this, though, make sure that your website is organized and that you have some interesting content for your visitors. How do I Increase tnhe sales in my Web design and development firm?

Find your niche market. Once you've figured out what kind of clientele you want to target, promote yourself within that market. Go to Small Business Association and Chamber of Commerce meetings and network! Go to their bulletin boards and answer web related questions. Always include a signature when posting to bulletin boards / answering questions online / sending out emails. Make sure to include the URL to your portfolio in your tagline. I'll put mine in the tagline to show what I mean (I usually don't sign my answers on this site).

Can you suggest the OS for Web Application Development please give reason for your answer?

PHP, JSP, PERL, Ruby - Linux.

Reason: They are all open source tools, so to maintain the spirit of open source go with Linux.

Note: All these technologies work well on Windows too.

ASP.NET, Cold Fusion - Windows

Reason: ASP.NET is a Microsoft platform so they prefer to have applications developed for it on Windows.

What web development platforms should I be learning?

Well, my idea for the past couple of years was to learn a language, and get a site started. I have a really good idea that is based on ideas from sites like digg.com, and wikipedia.com (not copying at all of course, a very original idea).

I have been learning PHP and MySQL for the past year, and now in a recent Yahoo Question, I have come to find out that most big company websites do not use this language. I feel really stupid now.

I was told I should be learning ruby, perl, ruby on rails, but the most popular one is asp.net

My question (with the thought of me starting my own popular website in the near future), is which language should I persue, and if so are there any really popular programs that are almost WSYIWYG editors or something close. Btw does asp.net cost money? May sound like a dumb question but this is the first time me hearing about asp.net (not asp though).

Also, to give you some specs, I want it to be Web 2.0 (completely user driven), fresh, and looks nice, dynamic

What web development platforms should I be learning?
I don't think you should get too hung up on the specific technology right now. If you are comfortable writing php and mysql, then go for it! If you have a great idea, prototype it and deliver it as a beta. You will learn by doing. Until you know what the key constraints are in your specific problem, it is unlikely that you will pick the perfect solution. A lot of this probably depends on how your app will be used and how it will evolve which at the beginning is hard to predict. So if you feel you have the tools to deliver something useful, do it. If you picked the ideal tools for the job, then great; if not, you can take what you've learned and re-implement in Ruby on Rails :)

My only additional piece of advice would be to familiarize yourself with the lower level technologies you are using. Many of these tools nicely and usefully abstract some of these details from you, but they are really worth knowing. An added benefit is that when you understand what your tool is doing for you under the covers, you can more easily switch tools. For example, i'm always surprised how many experienced web developers have fundamental gaps in their knowledge of http, etc.

Good luck!
Reply:thanks man! good luck and send me a preview of your beta site when you get it going! :) Report It

Reply:it is not entirely true. You can develop site in PHP, it is secure and fast to handle such data. ASP.net is in vogue but expensive. PHP being open source, abundant resources are available. You dont need to waste time to learn if you have good idea. Hire any offshore web development team eg http://www.net4gains.com and start.
Reply:ASP.net does not cost money in itself, but it MUST be run on a Microsoft server with .net architecture. This generally costs a bit more to get hosted than an Apache/PHP server, but not too much.

I personally like ASP.net, but PHP is very powerful as well. I have programmed in btoh and in general you can do the same things in both (though I have found sometimes it is a bit more complicaed in PHP). PHP is open source, where ASP is proprietary.

As for WYSIWYG editors, the most popular one for PHP is generally Dreamweaver ( http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweave... ) which costs some money, but is reasonable. And for ASP.net, Visual Studio is the program of choice - though it is quite expensive - A good alternative is Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express which is free and has a complete intellitype library, WYSIWYG capabilities and debugger:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/expres...

ASP.net also lets you program in either Visual Basic, or C#.

Both ASP.net and PHP are valuable and powerful languages, you just need to decide which one to focus on (it is smart to be at least somewhat educated in both)
Reply:Both PHP and ASP are very powerful programming languages and learning either of them is a great accomplishment.

I have been writing in ASP because i found it easier to work with, but either would get you what you want.

ASP.net wont cost money (well at least i dont think so)

Designing a Web development brief?

Would it be a good idea to build a dynamic online version, would it be enough, and would it work...what would make a good Web development brief to show to clients

Designing a Web development brief?
i think it is a good idea. so your visitors will have reason to visit your site again. if you dont update your site, then you will have very low returning visitors.
Reply:Youd probably want to have a test version on your computer. You could download a server like abyss to have a test run before you publish it on the web. A good thing to show on a web dev brief is a picture of how the users computer connects to the server basic process in non geek terms and tell them how it will help their buisness grow and expand.

Reply:this is not as easy because it depends on many things, mainly what your target employer is going to be. there are three broad areas o go for. ISP (which often use PHP and MySQL) or corporate which can be either JAVA and Java applicatrion servers or you can go down the microsoft path. I am a microsoft person and I recommend JAVA devlopement and something like websphere application server as a platform, but Microsoft is OK. If you want to work for ISP then maybe go for PHP and MySQL

What is the best web development programming language would you recommend.?

Thanks in advance

What is the best web development programming language would you recommend.?
I prefer PHP but ASP.net is better I hear. I use PHP solely for the purpose of server processing. (Input -%26gt; Process -%26gt; Output [yay]).

If you want an interactive site then develop it using Macromedia Flash. Flash is easier to learn and faster.

If you want a pure static site with no processing needed then you could use just HTML which is not considered a programming language.

Java is also a good development tool because it has many functionalities and libraries to choose from. It is, however, slower than Flash but more manipulatable (you can do more with it). This means that it can be more safe and stable than Flash.
Reply:ASP No!!!! far from being best. Argh! Evil technology.

ASP.NET... not bad, especially if you're talking about the latest version.

Php is used a lot but I can't recommend it yet... probably a good one to know. I fear that it may be a little to much like ASP however.

And also, its best if you did know some javascript as (unless you use flash or Java applets) this is what defines the client's interaction with your site. Especially since many sites are becoming more and more dynamic with AJAX (which is not a language but a javascript related technology/Buzzword).
Reply:Flash based website is cool. try macromedia flash. actionscripts as well
Reply:asp and asp.net r the best web development programming languages compared to others.
Reply:html written in notepad.
Reply:I would agree that ASP.NET is the way to go. I would recommend studying up on VB.NETor C#.NET to build the applications, ASP.NET is just the interface technology... akin perhaps to CGI/PERL in it's part in "development". It's a go-between. The real application development comes from VB or C# .NET stuff.

Diane Zak writes a decent book under the Thompson Learning Series Label, titled VB.NET 2005. It covers application development and the ASP.NET interchange between MS SQL Server or Access and the front end VB application. It's somewhere around Chapter 12 that it gets into ASP.NET.

Hope that helps.
Reply:ASP .Net

I'd stay out of web development - it's a crowded field and getting worse.

Go for software engineering, network system security, and so forth

WildBill - you are WAY OFF base on the design end. I have been doing it for 10 years - and NO ONE pays that today for a website unless it is a massive 30+ page site with major ASP data management software connected with DB management, and a whole ton more.

Most sites business wants only cost around $499, averaging around 8 hours of work, and that's if you can beat out the other 20 people ready to do it for less since they can work from a laptop out of a coffee shop.

XML and web development !?

Hi guys ,

Well , I understand that XML useful for communicating data and exchange between different platforms ..

I'm interesting in web development and it's technologies , can XML give special features for my job in web development that I can not get without ?

I 've purchased beginning XML ,4ed (Wrox) , but it's 1000+ pages and it's know that XML is used in applications as well as for Web .. Do I need to read irrelevant materials like those or get to the part concerning with the Web ? and what is it ?

XML and web development !?
Web development is not much different than any other development. The two differences are that your display is a usually a browser and you have to be concerned with security. You should not think of web development as some sort of separate entity.

XML is a big part of the web. However, it cannot entirely be separated out in terms of using it or not using it. For example, XHTML is XML. Web services use XML to move data between applications.

XML is used for so much more that web development. It is used to transport data in and out of databases. This might be used in the back-end of a web application but it isn't part of "the web" per se.

I don't know that you need to read 1000 pages to learn XML. Start by learning the basics of XML. Learn the general areas where it is used and for what. That way, when you come to a point where you need to do something you know where to find the information.
Reply:http://www.w3schools.com/
Reply:XML is just tags. Just read up on the links above and find an XML parser for the programming language you're using.

Web development degree?

I want to go for a web devlopment degree. Can anyone give me some advice on what exactly is the best way to do it by? Like the actual degree name. I basically want to get a degree in the programming aspect of it, Such as; java, css, xhtml, php, etc. I also thought maybe certifications was good instead of the degree? I want to start a small web development business. Thanks

Web development degree?
I personally went to a technical school (DeVry) and got a Bachelors in Computer Information Services. Any computer programming degree would do just so long as you know how to program and have the expensive piece of paper to prove it.

If you are like me and suck at graphical design work, then you can either outsource to graphical design companies or hire a graphical designer. But this is another important aspect of web development some people tend to loo over.

Once you know 1 programming language though then the rest will follow suit if you just spend some time brushing up on the tools and coding styles.

Hope this helps :)

I am due to start an open university course web basics design and development what are employers looking for?
learning about web design is as fast or as slow as you make it. there are a lot of different concepts to go over, but if you have a grasp of basic programming you will see that a lot of things are repeated over and over again. I recommend taking some courses and seeing what you think, if it is hard then go through the program, but if it seems easy then they arnt moving fast enough for you and you should just make a portfolio of what you can do. modern web apps use (some of) the following: php, asp, sql, java, jsp, javascript, perl, ruby, css, html.

most of them fall into similar categories, like php, perl and asp all can do very similar functions, and java jsp and javascript all follow java syntax (to an extent).

do what you can do, if you want to push yourself and learn you'll probably have to go to the local library and get some books. ...gl

Should I learn Web Development under Linux or Windows?

I was wondering if I should learn web development under linux with , java, ruby , html javascript,, php , css etc..?? Or asp.net, html, javascript, css Ms Sql05 etc..? I read the ads on Dice.com and for the microsoft asp.net offers they seems to be more flexible accepting only 2 yearrs of experience with asp.net etc..

But with Linux most require 4 years of experience and a 4 year degree which I don't have and don't expect to get. So what should I do??

Should I learn Web Development under Linux or Windows?
If you learn Microsoft products you can get a job doing all sorts of tech support, installing software, fixing hard disks...

If you learn the real deal under UNIX (Linux or OS X or Freebsd) your knowledge will apply to all systems (including windows)

it is more of a career with a full range of skills in the Linux world (which is why more experience is wanted) than the dirty work that needs to be done in the windows world.

Web Development Help?
great site

http://www.echoecho.com
Reply:http://www.asp.net if you want to learn .NET. Web forms and Windows forms in .NET are really similar, so if you learn one you can easily pick up the other.

http://www.w3schools.com/ is another good one.
Reply:I personally find the following site helpful and informative:

http://www.w3schools.com/

Lots of web related technologies.
Reply:There are some good tutorials at HTML Dog, as well the W3C (the organization that maintains the official HTML and CSS standards, amongst others).

I should note that none of the sites mentioned so far in the other answers use current best-practices, and echoecho.com and asp.net don’t even follow the official HTML specification. =/

You should also join an IRC* channel like irc://irc.dal.net/webdev – I can’t stress that enough.

* Internet Relay Chat, a real-time Internet chat protocol. Popular clients include mIRC and ChatZilla (an official Mozilla project).

I want to investigate a career in web development? can I get a job with a 1 or 2 year degree? prospects?

online degree, ok, to get job?.....what is typical work week like?

I want to investigate a career in web development? can I get a job with a 1 or 2 year degree? prospects?
degree doesnt really matter as much as your work, show off your skills. and a typical work week in a medium sized ad agency for me is this yahoo thingy, watching movies online, video games and occasionaly workin
Reply:I think it would depend on how well your skills are already. If you can create amazing websites and know how to code the sites then it probably won't matter what degree you have. You could always do it for personal interest and see if technology's changed any (which it usually does).

Most likely no work week would be the same. Some times code might break and you have to go and fix it. Other days you might be creating a new layout for a new version of the site.

Good luck with your job search :)
Reply:I don't think it's really an academic degree unless you are going into management -- dictating the big picture.

It's skills! And there are many different areas.

I have taken online courses from an accredited community college in CSS and JavaScript. It was not easy because all my school life I paced my progress with the other students (maybe I am competitive). However, it was great -- an online classroom with forums, assignments etc.

I'd take a class in Graphic Design -- if you've noticed the shift to pastels and more neutral colors on websites (like this one) then you see the impact of Graphic Designers.

Coding -- Knowing C++ would be ideal. JavaScript and HTML and CSS are codes that work within a specific environment.

Data Base -- the true strength of the Internet is management of huge data bases. Giant sites like Google and Yahoo and even youtube and wikipedia have staggering data bases.

Interfaces -- the bloom of the Internet is User Participation like blogs, forums, wikipedia and even this site we are on right now, Answers. My guess is they are mostly driven by PHP, a module based interface. I don't know a lot how that works, sorry.

Pick an area and become an expert. Overlap your skills as you can. Develop talent if you are artistic or a writer. Keep an eye on trends by subscribing to blogs, websites, e-mail newsletters and podcasts to keep you up-to-date on the ever shifting world of web site development.

Good luck, I think there are plenty of jobs for an industrious individual.

I need help to get IT & web development work from world wode?

I guess you're an Indian, Bhavesh; and what you're asking is how can you get IT and Web Development work World Wide?

I'm afraid your English Language and Communications Skills are lacking and you'll need to work on this first.

Once you've mastered that, you can go around promoting yourself on the Net.

Having your MySpace and 360* and presence in the blogs will help you achieve that.

But, if you can't communicate well, people will not give you their Contracts, will they?

Besides, why should I [for example] choose you over the thousands of other Professionals in the Market?

If your webpage is innovative enough to answer that question with "Look, I am much more creative! And know how to use the gamut of Web Building Resources!" well, then, you're talking business!!

So, first try to do the first thing first. Learn to Communicate in English!

Because, Bhavesh, in your mother tongue, you won't get too much business and for International Business you need to speak in English, and that, too, world class!

At the same time, work on making your own impressive Web Page, using the free resources you have.

All the very best!

I have an idea for a social networking website but know nothing about web development/programming/design...

What's the best way to get a developer? Can you get 1 person who can program and design(do all)? Best way? Hire full time, university students, etc?

I have an idea for a social networking website but know nothing about web development/programming/design...
There are a million of them out there so try and really think why yours would be good enough to attract people away from facebook or myspace.

If you can't personally contribute anything to the project besides the idea it's going to be hard for you to get a group of people together at all. Learn to code yourself and then try and see if the idea is still worth it to you. If your idea is a good one you'll probably need at least 3 good programmers to build your site. The problem is, since you don't know how to program, you won't know who is a good programmer. That is what killed a lot of the tech startups in the bubble era.

So, in summary, learn to program for a month and see if you're still interested. No one is going to take a truly worthwhile idea in that time.

Good luck!
Reply:You can post your project at freelance website like http://ww.getafreelnacer.com/ and let many web designers bid for your project. You can then hire whoever you like.
Reply:Ask people on open source projects or web design project sites. Most are not going to do it for free and will charge quite a bit. You could always do what I did for my social site and it works great once you learn it. It is called Joomla. It is a community builder. Look it up. If you need help, let me know at my site below. Good luck

Brian - http://www.techslip.com
Reply:1. Do NOT get a one-person-does-all guy. It takes a lot to be a good designer and it takes a lot to be a good developer and it almost never happens that people are that good at both. Most of the great websites you see are made by 2 guys minimum and on a major site a team of 5 might not be enough.

2. University students are not good for big projects. I'm one of them and I'll say it right now. They can't put in the work you'll need and they tend not to have the skills necessary to get it done right. Most of the uni. students I've met wouldn't be up to the challenge. They need a good year or two of working before they're up for something like that. The only reason I can say that with such conviction is because I've had that year, I took a year off to freelance, and I learned more then than I did in my entire degree and other design classes.

3. If you're running this as a business then you should considered getting a design studio to do the initial creation and then start building your own group to take over to maintain and improve the site. Guys like FaceBook and MySpace will have an in-house team to take care of 99% of the stuff that goes on and then just farm out when they need the extra help.

Does anyone have any advice, on how i should be learning web development coding, like in which order ?

like say html, xhtml, javascript, etcc. or html, xhtml, php, which order do you suggest ?

Does anyone have any advice, on how i should be learning web development coding, like in which order ?
I don't think there's an utterly independent order. Some of the items fall logically together by tier.

Presentation/View - Browser Tier

X/HTML, CSS, DOM, JavaScript - each of these has its own peculiarities in the different browsers. I suggest starting with X/HTML, since it provides the presentation structure for a document. The appearance attributes of the HTML are modified by CSS and can be manipulated by JavaScript operations on the DOM. As you become more adept in X/HTML, you'll see the need for the addition of CSS and JavaScript - sort of an organic thing.

Program/Controller - Web App Tier

Perl, PHP, C++, Java, etc...pick one and get good at it (I'm a Java guy). This is where the traffic-cop control goes. What's going to be done and which program is going to do it gets handled here. The skills you'll gain by learning any of these will be extensible back to your JavaScripting and forward to the next tier.

Model/Data - Business Tier

The abstract data-model that represents the business lives here. Your Controller tier language will be useful and you'll probably need to add SQL for addressing databases.

The suggested order is based on the target of developing an all-around developer who can do everything. You may prefer to do fewer things better. I know Java developers who couldn'y style (code CSS) their way out of a wet paper bag. I know UIEs who have no clue what a class is.

I'm bettin' you'll get a bunch of answers to this question. Read 'em all and think about what you enjoy and want.
Reply:Start with HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Then you can learn how to manipulate the HTML objects using Javascript. Then learn PHP and MySQL or whatever server languages you're interested in.
Reply:Start with basic HTML...then go to Java...
Reply:learn html and css and be able to remember them at the ability to write the code yourself witout using any kind of resource.

then after these, if you really want to learn php then learn it and when you've mastered it by mastered i mean being able to code a basic client managment system coding it by head no notes or copying scripts.

then you can learn xhtml then xml then javascript and ajax then you can combine these knowledges into php amd make your crm system look cool.

all these knowledges combined should take about 5 years to study and practice and remember your code and create a few applications of of it.
