4 years ago I was in similar situation as yours, I was trying to find ways to earn some extra income on top of my day job as web designer.
The only thing I did at that time was going around to meet people and told them I was a web designer. Until one day, someone who did some photo-shooting for me, found out what I was doing and asked if I would help re-design her old web site and I took it up right away.
After I completed her site, she referred her other photographer partner to me, and then the new customer referred another friend, and the rest was history.
So my point here being: you need to go out and tell people what you do. It's that simple!
If you are a shy person (whom 98% of web developers happen to be), you could start by writing some nifty scripts and offer them in script repository sites for free, such as Hotscripts.com, Needscripts.com, Freshmeat.com etc.
That way, if people like your scripts and download to use it, they will contact you when they get into difficulty getting things to work, and many of times, they would not mind paying you money to fix them. That is how you can build up your rapport. It is one of the better ways to show people what you are capable of.
And the best part is, since you still have your day job, you have all the time in the world for you to develop your own script and still get the paycheck every end of the month.
Another thing you can do: which is also what I'm doing (and I'm giving it away for free), is to start looking around the web for some web designers' web site, find those that were not properly coded (such as without a proper contact form etc), and offer them your service to help them spruce up their web site with your scripting skill (if that is what you are good at).
Doing so, you may not get paid the first time, but have faith that the next time they get a freelance job, they will count you in for the scripting part (more than 70% of web designers out there are lack of scripting skills, many didn't even know HTML!)
So in summary, my friend, all you need to do is just stretch out your hand and tell the world about what you are doing. Money don't fall from sky, even if they did, you still need to do some running to reach for them and grab them. Good luck.

No, as long as you know your stuff. While a formal education is vital in the advancement of any job, someone who has worked with a programming language for years can be as adequate as someone who worked with it for years in school.
As far as your question with regards to being harder than web development, the answer is no. Actually, web development and computer programming are merging together quite quickly. Very few places setup a website without some sort of server-side programming language supporting it. Most of the sites you see today are written in PHP, ASP, Coldfusion or .NET. They then have scripts that can range from cgi to perl to Java and javascript.
All you have to do is put in the time and dedication to studying a programming language and you can get just as far. Don't be discouraged.

I'm looking to create a website to sell professional photos that a family member has taken. I'm going to design and develop it myself, but I don't know what languages would be necessary to design a professional and presentable website. I currently have basic understanding of HTML. I also do have Macromedia Dreamweaver CS3, but I don't really know how to use it or if I will need to use it. Does anyone know any resources or what languages I should learn to create this website?

Is it worth it studying an online univ. a bachelor's in Web Design/Development?
My only choise of learning Web Design/Development is by studying an online univ. I maybe won't be able to study in the US states since I don't live there and is probably more expensive.
Is it a good experience studying an online univ. and not inside the class seeing your classmates/professors? I sometimes feel that maybe I won't learn well because is not the same.

I received my Master's Degree in Business Administration online at Baker College's Center of Graduate Studies and am currently working on my PhD at Walden University online. In the online environment, I found it helpful to establish a relationship with classmates who you can call and talk over things about class. Several of my classmates live outside of the United States, so that is not a problem. As for Web Design, check out www.bakercollegeonline.com for a bachelor's in web design.

In the US, the origin of your degree is sometimes as important as the degree itself. I would try to find reputable state universities that offer online web design classes. I would hate for you to spend oodles of money getting a Phoenix web design degree and then not getting job offers. Try to google non-web-based reputable universities that have web design as an online option and then inquire. I bet most of them will cost the same if not cheaper than Phoenix.
Reply:The Art Institute of Pittsburgh (Online Division) is an excellent choice for a Graphic Design (Associate or Bachelor) degree. I recommend that you start with the associate program first. That way if you later find out that this is not what you want to do, you haven't wasted too much time and money but at least you already secured yourself an associate degree diploma that you can always put in your resume.
Once you have your associate degree, you can start finding a job in this field, or if you want to continue studying, your associate degree should count towards a Bachelor's degree.
As far as online studying, it's all up to your personal drive and motivation if you want to get the most out of it. It takes a lot of discipline to be on your own studying online. The only bad thing about online studying is that you don't get the benefit of social interaction that you normally get in the traditional classroom setting.

Are there other good online univ that teaches this?
What are good Univ/College that teaches bachelor's in Web Design/Development that are NOT online but in real class?
I'm sorry for asking so much questions but I really need to know this before I make my desicion.

Is it worth it studying an online univ. a bachelor's in Web Design/Development?
I received my Master's Degree in Business Administration online at Baker College's Center of Graduate Studies and am currently working on my PhD at Walden University online. In the online environment, I found it helpful to establish a relationship with classmates who you can call and talk over things about class. Several of my classmates live outside of the United States, so that is not a problem. As for Web Design, check out www.bakercollegeonline.com for a bachelor's in web design.

In the US, the origin of your degree is sometimes as important as the degree itself. I would try to find reputable state universities that offer online web design classes. I would hate for you to spend oodles of money getting a Phoenix web design degree and then not getting job offers. Try to google non-web-based reputable universities that have web design as an online option and then inquire. I bet most of them will cost the same if not cheaper than Phoenix.
Reply:The Art Institute of Pittsburgh (Online Division) is an excellent choice for a Graphic Design (Associate or Bachelor) degree. I recommend that you start with the associate program first. That way if you later find out that this is not what you want to do, you haven't wasted too much time and money but at least you already secured yourself an associate degree diploma that you can always put in your resume.
Once you have your associate degree, you can start finding a job in this field, or if you want to continue studying, your associate degree should count towards a Bachelor's degree.
As far as online studying, it's all up to your personal drive and motivation if you want to get the most out of it. It takes a lot of discipline to be on your own studying online. The only bad thing about online studying is that you don't get the benefit of social interaction that you normally get in the traditional classroom setting.

The web server itself specifies what pages will be searched for when no file is given.
Depending on the web server the options will vary. I'm running IIS and my system will look for the following files in this order:
Default.aspx
Default.htm
Default.asp
index.htm
This means if no file name is given it will look for those files at the root of the website.
If I added home.html to the bottom of the list, then the web developer would have to create a home.html in the root folder of his or her website. The root of the website would not be able to have the other files.
If I added home.html to the top of the list and the web developer had every file in the list in the root of the website, then the home.html file would be displayed since it's at the top of the list.

In web development, how would one create a URL like example.com/example/ rather than example.com/example.html?
I constantly see website addresses which end without any sort of file extension (so something like "example.com/example/" rather than "example.com/example.html"). So, for a relatively inexperienced web developer, how does one remove the file extension from the end of the URL? Is there just a folder in the address which "/example/" would be referring to (like "example.com would automatically go to example.com/index.html)? Thanks in advance!

Generally, a web server needs a default extension. HTML, PHP, ASP, etc...they need something. If you have your default page set to index.html, and in that /example/ folder there is an index.html, then the web server will understand the directory contents, as well as /example/index.html

Looking for final year project ideas - What kind of new web site can I create?
I'm a third year computer/information management studies student and I'm looking for ideas for what to do as a final year project. Leaving it a little late, truth be told... I am good with web development, and have learned C# .net over the summer.
I actually want to create a web site/service that is of real use to people, rather than just showing off my skills.
So can people please suggest some (serious) things they wish there was a web site for out there, and perhaps I could build it.
Obviously legal and not free mp3's or porn or something silly like that.

Additionally, build a RSS feed off of it so that a person could put new questions in their rss reader. Its been done by Yahoo and Google but for a student that would be pretty good.
Finally, if you have time build out some web services that do all the above to allow others to mashup the services into other web sites/services/applications.

Reply:C# is neat (even if it is just a hash between C and Java), but it's not really widely used in web publishing. You're best sticking with XHTML/Javascript (with maybe a tiny bit of Flash, but make sure you've got alternatives built into your site for those who haven't got the plugin if you use it), scripting languages like ASP/PHP and databases.
Shops are usually a top-scoring final year computing project. You don't need to get the framework for purchase sorted out, but providing a front end, a database interface, an admin/stock control system, concurrency control and a security system all together would make for an excellent demonstration of your skills.
Similarly, you might wish to try some sort of multi-user message board system (Yahoo Answers is a very good example of something you could do); possibly with some sort of complex scoring system or "Combat" system between users (a textual online multiplayer RPG, for example).
Mind you, there is always the "neat graphical gimmik" option since you know C#. If you can come up with some innovative algorithm for drawing visually impressive things on screen based on unusual input, you're set. I've met a guy whose project was to draw exportable landscapes in Java on the basis of a text-file input and the characters read in from the file. What's more, he then proceeded to pass all sorts of html pages into it from across the web, which was an awesome display.

this means all we can use for image manipulation is windows paint or something lame like http://www.myimager.com/ or http://www.gifworks.com/ that have extremely limited tools.
i would love to see a photoshop like java applet on the web. we now have java ftp clients like http://www.unlimitedftp.com/myftp (works as good as those you install) so why can't we have a decent FREE image editor?

You should get into PHP. That way you can "save" your page in a database and call it when necessary. You put the same code on every page and if you need to change your page, you change it in the database and it will change everything.

Web development, starting a community site?
when starting a community site (myspace/facebook/faceparty etc), how is the best way to get members. because obviously the database is empty, so members arent going to sign up to a site where there are no members, and you arent going to get more members if people dont sign up. is there a way to get around this? or is it simply a case of adding a few hundred example profiles and allowing time for the site to snowball?

A lot of people (myself included) only join where there friends are. Thats the whole reason I have aim, because all of my friends are on aim. As much as I hate myspace, all of my friends are there, and only there, so, I am too, lol

ASP compulsary.Javascript or VBScript,any of the two.
ASP is a Server Side scripting,used to process the data entered in the form.Javascript or VBScript is used on the client side (user's browser) to validate data and perform other functions.It cannot be used to manipulate data in the database.
My recommendation : Learn Javascript not VBScript.It is more commonly used.
Learn ASP.NET or PHP rather than ASP.ASP is outdated.

In server-side terms, I doubt any one will be a "standard," but you'll never go wrong working with PHP. ASP.NET will likely be changed in the future, but Microsoft will always deploy a proprietary Web server and scripting methodology, and they show no signs of surrendering market position anytime soon.
On the client side, it is likely that XML -- and variations on the extensiblily model -- will become preeminent. The way that happens is anyone's guess.

I would not make a practice of relying on code generating programs, be it Dreamweaver or CodeCharge or anything else. Learning how to do makes you understand why things work, and understanding why is crucial to producing elegant, adaptable solutions.

The short answer is no. Most software development companies expect you to understand their chosen languages intimately and to develop code in a team environment -- something a code generator is not going to help you do.
Reply:Web development will be eliminated with the exception of working for Web Hosting sites. It is much cheaper and EASIER to use web builders. Not to mention that companies can save THOUSANDS of dollars on Web Servers/Mail Servers if they just buy the services from AT%26amp;T, Yahoo, etc...

I'm thinking of studying a course of an Associate's Degree (2 years) in Graphic Design. I believe that if I take this course it will help me learn how to be more creative designing on the computer and they will even teach us how to design a website. It depends, what aspect of design would you like to get into is the question. Most cases graphical interfaces are a huge part of web design; knowing how to do a proper layout is one thing, but applying visual aspects such as menus, images, animations and such does require knowldge of graphics and interfaces; so I do recommend at leat learning the basics and having a good sense of design and construction.

It would 100% not hurt, I would assume it would open new doors for you and give you alternative ways of looking for a solution for a problem when it comes to design; having preperation is important and learning different approaches can only make you better, so I'd say 100% yes it would help.

I took both at the same shot, but I didn't enter the design world without any knowldge, the key is having a good sense of design naturally and spicing it up by learning new techniques and styles. It was worth it; again preperation is the key to success, the more you see, learn and do the better.

Not at all, you never know how much of a success it could be. You should feel excited particapating in a new course; and learning new things.

Web design and development focuses on the technical aspects, at least my courses did, and did not have any focus at all on design. If you want to be a web designer, focusing on the design aspect I believe this is the way to go. You need to learn programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc.
Reply:Web Development/Design is really up to you to master. You will need a lot of research and experience doing actual projects that no class will offer. I would think the school would be more useful for Graphic Design. If you want to do web development look into CS degrees.
Be brave, and learn as much as you can. Go beyond the course requirements if you are passionate and have the time. Start building a website.
During your Graphic Design studies, focus on the popular programs out there. Know how to use them in and out and well. Flash very powerful and in high demand. Photoshop for image editing. If you want to get into animation, video games and etc. look into 3D Max Studio (maybe also Maya). For web development learn HTML, CSS, DOM and JavaScript really well.
So when picking classes, keep the above in mind. Focus on getting techinal expertise as you don't need a class to nurture your creativity.

Design is critically important. Don't neglect your design skills and interests, but don't fixate on that either. There's a hundred 'designers' out there (with great ideas but no real idea how to implement them) for each developer who can really code a page, attach data to it, and make it work interactively.
Right or wrong, there's very little market for pure designers on the web today. You absolutely must be comfortable with the technical side, because the strengths and limitations of web-based design are vastly different than on paper-based media traditionally taught in design programs.
There's honestly not much of a market for pure web page developers either. Knowing HTML and having a copy of FrontPage (OK, Expression Web) is not enough to make you competitive any more.
Today's clients are not satisfied with static web pages. They want interactive applications with a data back-end and real interactivity. Let's face it, they can also buy a copy of Dreamweaver if that's all it takes to build a web site.
If you want to be truly competitive, you need to continue practicing your design skills, but look carefully at a program with a strong technical component, including standards-based web development and at least an introduction to programming on the client, and the server, and some instruction on databases.
If you're already a creative person, don't spend too much time up front taking a program that enhances your creativity. It sounds to me like you're already strong on the creativity side. You'll probably be able to learn more about that on your own. Instead, focus on those skills you aren't as comfortable with that will give you quicker access to the workplace.
I have this conversation with students almost every day, and they usually don't believe me. Years later, they find me again and ask for exactly what I recommended at the beginning.

How Much Should I Charge for Website Development/Management?
As the topic says. I am extremely familiar with HTML. I use the latest design tools to aid in web development (Photoshop CS2, Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8, etc.) as well as I am strong in Flash animation/actionscript, extremely familiar with Dreamweaver and very familiar with Photoshop CS2. I will be in charge of designing the website as well as managing it for my cousin instead of designing the website and letting her do all the content changes and such. How much should I charge for working on the website and maintaining it?

I see added costs for each link. Each photo. For the great ocean of customers that haven't a clue this business that is a fair price. $200 a page is not uncommon.

Heck, I saw one page done in FP where every single line of text had about 300 characters of CSS code... and it was the same for every single line. You could have saved 40KB by making a couple lines in a CSS file. So, for this reason I really dislike Frontpage. I have no experience with Dreamweaver, so I cannot comment on it's output.
Reply:DreamWeaver rocks (especially for big websites). FrontPage isn't shipped anymore, the successors from Microsoft are SharePoint Designer (basics, included in MS Office 2007) and Expression Web (professional web design), I haven't used them, but FrontPage isn't the best choice definitely.
Someone has mentioned Notepad. If you need something lightweight and simple then google for 'Notepad++'. It has syntax highlighting for the most common languages and other useful features

Reply:DreamWeaver rocks (especially for big websites). FrontPage isn't shipped anymore, the successors from Microsoft are SharePoint Designer (basics, included in MS Office 2007) and Expression Web (professional web design), I haven't used them, but FrontPage isn't the best choice definitely.
Someone has mentioned Notepad. If you need something lightweight and simple then google for 'Notepad++'. It has syntax highlighting for the most common languages and other useful features

No, frames have absolutely no place. Everything a frame can do, it can be done much better and cleaner with CSS and/or server-side includes. Even AJAX can use DIVs (or SPANs) without relying on Iframes.

Dreamweaver or VisualBasic for web development?
I have a website that is all .html right now. I want to make it more interactive and my webhost supports frontpage extensions, php, mysql, .asp extensions, so on so forth. I don't need flashy graphics or anything like that. Just the ability to have contol over the website and to able to setup automatic registration and things like that. However, if you want cheapest solution, you may want to consider PHP with MySQL as database. I have a PHP based website hosted with Yahoo! Geocities (paid services). It allows me to make database, access to that database, manipulate the date, etc.

Another reason you may want to consider PHP is because of the prevelance of php hosts, and they are often cheaper than similar windows based hosts. There will also be tons of examples using PHP to MySQL db. Most ASP examples will assume you are either going against access or MS SQL Server.
Although, I have recommended using PHP to this particular problem presented, I by far prefer ASP and spent years using it professionally. If you are looking at the big picture and are considering a career in web development, there may be some other items to consider.

What is joomla in web development ?
Joomla is Content Management System (CMS) software. CMS software allows web site owners to organize and show content effectively. Above all it separates the content from the formatting. For example in a traditional web page and design change would require updating all the pages in that site using the new design.

.Net (C# or VB) will be the best language for this, since it's extremely easy to learn, deploy and maintain. .Net also comes with thousands of standard built in helper classes that will make your job easier and cut down on time. The .Net IDE is very productive and easy to use. Java is dificult to learn, manage, etc and will take much longer than doing it in .net, even with skilled developers.

Web Site Development tools for design and programming?
I would like to develop a e-commerence site. I would like to use ASP.Net and VB.Net. I don't know which tools shall I use to develpe that site. I perfer to write coding in Visual Studio 2005 and desgin web site in Dreamweaver. I am not sure whether I can design in Dreamweaver and write coding in Visual Stuido 2005. Which tools do you recommend? Thanks....

If you want to use Visual Studio 2005, use it for both design and coding.
But if you are comfortable with designing in Dreamweaver, do it. Then import the HTML into your Visual Studio project and code it.
There is no hard and fast rule of "Design here and Code here". So go for what you are comfortable with.

Reply:I don't know if you've considered an Apache / PHP / MySQL setup. There are several 3 in one programs that install all at once and set them up for you in a one-er.
Before somebody screams... - you don't need Linux to run Apache, there'a Windows version too. This is my setup for web development There's plenty of free scripts and stuff to save you re-inventing the wheel.
I have VS and Dreamweaver too but I do more with Linux web servers that MS so Apache suits me better.
