What is my next step towards making better web sites?

I have very little experience in web development. I know basic html and can stumble through making basic web pages, but I'd like to improve. I don't intend on becoming a professional and simply enjoy helping friends as a hobby. What would be my next logical step of study? XHTML and CSS?

What is my next step towards making better web sites?
Yeah look up those and asp. Go out and purchase a template.

PLEASE
Reply:the next set is going into something like Joomla or something with PHP, it's easier than html, but it's confusing while you learn how to use it.

i'm only 15 and i like it better than HTML
Reply:build lots of them, learning as you go. Yes, XHTML and CSS are essential, and php and MySQL will help you build large dynamic sites easily.

The best way to learn is to do, so build lots of pages. You can put them in a subdirectory where nobody else has access, if you like, but the more you use the tools, the better you will get.
