I'm a print designer looking to take a path change and not sure which one to focus on. Where are the better career oportunities? Flash and Actionscript programming or traditional Web / CSS / Javascript? I know you need a little of both but the jobs seem to be one or the other.. Opinions??
Flash or Web development? Which is the better career path?
Neither is necessarily better. It depends which you prefer. You can make a living at either.

Reply:I'd have to favor 'web development' myself.
I saw a lot of 'flash' enabled web sites over the last few years, but they're now not as popular.
On the other hand, if you're into 'web development', then you can further your career in that field by learning about SEO or 'Search Engine Optimization', which when needed by the right company, can lead to a pretty nice monthly paycheck!
Let's not forget knowing Javascript is also a plus as well and is more desireable, IMHO, then knowing Flash!
Hope this helps shed some light for you?

Reply:You should focus on both and do the best you can to learn both. Therein lies the greater potential if you can use the power of both together. I've tried to be a good web developer first and they always ask me about actionscript. So, I'm trying to figure it out as well. I know html, css, xml with xsl, javascript, php, mysql, and flash.
Reply:Let me get straight: you want to move from printing to web. If you want to build a website, you must know what kind of site you will build, like a portfolio or e-commerce? If its a portfolio, you must specify further, e.g. who is your target audience—singer, photographer, company portfolio has different audiences. Then you decide what tools you need to develop it. The tools are Flash, HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc,, and most likely a combination of them. Looking this way, your question is not correct because it is not between Flash and Others. It is a "web knowledge" that you must grasp. And the key point is how long will you grasp these knowledge and "knowhows", let count it for Flash, CSS, HTML and PHP—as a printing man, I guess you didn't have background of any programming language. Add this to your age, is it worth for career turn?
Your question might be correct if It means that you will learn Flash to start as a specialist in multimedia presentation for a company, a seminar, or creating visual backdrop for a wedding. You don't need to learn that much.
So consider wisely.
