What are the most common Languages, hot topics in web programming at the moment?

Hi,

I am thinking of returning to web development but have been out of it for a while. Have done some little projects with PHP/SQL with some CSS/XML. Is ASP still used much? what other technologies are good to know how to use at the mo?

Many thanks!

What are the most common Languages, hot topics in web programming at the moment?
Javascript will become even more important in about a years time as AJAX (the stuff Google Maps is coded with) becomes more mainstream.

I am sorry to say that ASP will never be a dominant language as it is Miscrosoft and about 80% of servers are Linux based. Many IIS (Windows) Servers can use PHP but few Linux server feature ASP. This does mean that a potential niche market will develop for ASP developers. The other problems are that you will be taught VBscript using ASP, linking with Access or MS SQL again restricting your options. I believe the main area of ASP use will be corporate businesses but that means your customer base will be limited.

XHTML/CSS is a must, it will become the backbone of all websites and then client side scripting via javascript and then some form of serverside scripting, this will most likely be PHP/MySQL combination.

The plus side is that if you learn one of the languages it make it soo much easier to learn others. Such as Actionscripting for Flash or JAVA or PERL or Ruby on Rails (technically a framework).
Reply:Well AJAX (Asynchronous Java and XML) is very hot at the moment - simply put, it allows you to update the contents of a web page without reloading the whole page. There are a few security considerations to note if you are going to use this for personal/customer data.

I use ASP.NET - for website back-end programming this is still a widely used technology, especially now .net2.0 is here and VS2005/MSSQL Express.

PHP is still popular too, and is widely supported and documented, which makes it easier when you get stuck.

CSS3 should be out soon, but CSS2 is the backbone for many of todays website formatting. No more messy tables or frames.

Knowing a combination of all of these and more, helps a great deal, although most things can be achieved with only one or two languages, each website is different. When you say to a customer you can design/update web pages, they do not know any difference and expect you to take on their PHP/coldfusion/ASP intermingled mess and get the results they are after.

Good Luck
Reply:I'm not a developer, but someone paying developers alot of money to develop for me...they are using SQL Server and ASP.Net v.2. Apparently these are the main skills nowadays, but tbh, it's all russian to me ;)
Reply:Ruby on Rails is very hot right now. Free downloadable RAD (rapid application development) system.

Is it possible to return to being a web developer after being a sysadmin for 5 years?

I want to go back to working for a large consulting firm as a web developer. Is it possible to return to doing that after being a systems/network admin for the past 5 years? I was mainly a front-end developer with some back-end knowledge. Do I need to spend a year learning new skills and doing projects on the side before applying for a job in web development?

Is it possible to return to being a web developer after being a sysadmin for 5 years?
No, you will be alright. Just make your mind open for new ways and always keep learning and use google for all your questions.
Reply:i was a sys admin and tech support for about 200 people and decided i wanted to be on the build-it side rather than the fix-it side. i started developing with ms frontpage, with a ms access back-end, just building myself tools to track users, etc.

6 years later i'm an ASP, VB, VB.NET developer building complex intranet and client-server applications with SQL database back-ends. all self-taught. like the other post said, google can be your best friend when you're learning and even developing. if i can't remember the syntax for a tag or function or need an idea how to do something, i hit google to find all the developer bulletin board.

start tinkering, you'll catch on quick with all your computer %26amp; networking experience. the learning curve is a little steep at first but you'll ride it right thru the roof once you get the hang of it. i'm on the lower end of the curve right now having made the jump to .NET, but i am enjoying the challenge.

best of luck to you!

Where can I get web designing and web development training in San Diego, Ca.?

I would like to learn how to create web pages, and all the aspects of a web master

Thanks.

Where can I get web designing and web development training in San Diego, Ca.?
One great way is through universities. The university of San diego has courses on web design and even a Q%26amp;A on campus around August 18th. You could also try the University of California - San Diego.

If you are against a university class, you could also go to google and try something like "San Diego technology courses" and I am sure you will have tons in your area. After all, you are in California and there are tons of tech places there.

Hope this helps!

What's the average-going web developer charge? Is their work usually quoted hourly, or say, per project?

I'm just looking for what you'd pay your modern-day web developer for contract work. An organization I work with is looking for some kind of web development work, most likely something on an hourly basis... what's a competetive rate for that kind of work these days?

What's the average-going web developer charge? Is their work usually quoted hourly, or say, per project?
I get $500 to build a site (designed the logos too) and $20/hour to update.

Where can i get a crash course on web development? what is a free software closest to macromedia dreamweaver?

I am not aware of any great sites for learning web design. I learned basic HTML from this site: http://www.lissaexplains.com/ yes it may seem childish, but it is a very helpful site.

For a great program, there is nothing to directly compete with Macromedia Dreamweaver, but I have found a great little program called NVU http://www.nvu.com/ however, it is inactive and possibly not being developed anymore. But, a bunch of users who love the product are continuing developing it and have renamed it Kompozer, a temporary branch from NVU until the developers either announce the next version or cancel the product.

As far as I know, there is no official site for Kompozer, you can download it from Download.com here: http://www.download.com/KompoZer/3000-20...

Hope this helps! :)

Reply:Business couldn't find enough web developers during the dot.com heyday. But there were job openings for entry-level workers. Further back when computers ran from the terminal (mainframe / mini-mainframe) there were entry-level positions available. Today, I have noticed too many qualified persons doing per-piece work through craigList and rentAcoder.com. If I were going to pursue a new IT career, I would tough it out at a recognized university which has a proven track record of hiring out their graduates. Many IT companies only hire on-campus or they require a minimum of 2 years of verifiable on-the-job experience. Coming out of a mediocre learning institution handicaps the job seeker because the technology is evolving so fast. Paying out of your own pocket is a no-win game -- the employer needs to pay for the training and equipment they want. Finally, the bleeding edge software development teams are a young man's sport. Your IT career is a wash after age 30. I personally got excluded because of Outsourcing.
Reply:Hey buddy I think that being a software engineer is better cuz you will be highly paid for it because you will be makin new softwares and that is what matters. Being a web developer is just stupid cuz you make a website so wats the big deal in it, people come and visit your site, become members, and pay you for the membership, MONTHLY ! So you decide pal, being paid monthly or weekly, its your choice cuz thats what I heard and know so I thought of tellin it to you for some advice.
Reply:a software engineer is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software.

Web developer is a software developer or software engineer who is specifically engaged in the development of World Wide Web applications, or distributed network applications that are run over the HTTP protocol from a web server to a web browser.

so while ur in a doubt..

i suggest u try software engineer
Reply:Web development is simply a subset of software engineering. Long gone are the days of static HTML web pages. Web devs are programmers whose primary environment are web browsers. They still deal with many of the same challenges as other programmers using different languages across various platforms.

There really is no "better" choice here. My suggestion is to go with what interests and motivates you personally. You're much more likely to succeed at whatever specialty you chose if it's something you're passionate about. (As cliche as it sounds, it's true.)

It seems to me that web development has a slightly lower barrier to entry in that the environment (a web browser) comes standard on pretty much every computer these days. HTML itself is easy to learn but it's not a programming language. Because of this I think there tends to be an assumption that web development is easier than more traditional programming environments. This is further reinforced by "web developers" who simply deploy slightly customized third party content management systems rather than actually creating an application from the ground up.

The line between front end and back end is often blurred and most web devs worth their salt are going to be proficient in some server side languages in addition to the markup, CSS and Javascript which runs in the browser itself.

Good programmers will always be in demand because good programming transcends specific languages and platforms.
Reply:To be honest anyone can get a "For Dummies" book and make a webpage. There are far fewer that can handle the math involved with software engineering. You will be much more in demand with the latter and make much more money as well.

Why is the web design and web development industry so 'male dominated'?

It's cultural. Women in the US are discouraged as children from entering math and science related areas. It might be happening in the classroom, but I suspect it's happening in the home, too. Since mothers are role models for daughters, I suspect the problem feeds itself. If mom's not a computer person, then her daughter probably won't be, either.

I think it's striking how many women in Eastern Europe pursue Math, Science, and technology related careers. It's not considered unusual or "unladylike" in those countries, so there are many more women in those fields.

Why is the web design and web development industry so 'male dominated'?
Yes, i think its both genetic + environmental conditioning!
Reply:Most likely because men are "left-brain" dominant (logic and spacial ability).

Many women are math/science oriented and shouldn't have a problem getting into that field.
Reply:Because, for whatever reason, women don't want to sit in front of a computer all day, for the most part.

Men don't mind this. I spend about 10 hours everyday, unless I'm on vacation.

Do anyone know the name of a web development company, who can build meta search engine and search engine?
You can use Google's search tool. They have a tool that you download on to your machine and it will index everything you tell it to. You can then also have it re-index every so often.

Won't have to pay for the development costs.
Reply:ummm, there are only really 3, google yahoo and microsoft, basicly everything else (ask, metacrawler, overture.....) is "powered" by them. Basicly , they already exist. You dont need one from scratch, its worthless, i think, you'll have to specify.

Flash or Web development? Which is the better career path?

I'm a print designer looking to take a path change and not sure which one to focus on. Where are the better career oportunities? Flash and Actionscript programming or traditional Web / CSS / Javascript? I know you need a little of both but the jobs seem to be one or the other.. Opinions??

Flash or Web development? Which is the better career path?
Neither is necessarily better. It depends which you prefer. You can make a living at either.

http://www.dougv.com/blog/2007/05/26/the...
Reply:I'd have to favor 'web development' myself.

I saw a lot of 'flash' enabled web sites over the last few years, but they're now not as popular.

On the other hand, if you're into 'web development', then you can further your career in that field by learning about SEO or 'Search Engine Optimization', which when needed by the right company, can lead to a pretty nice monthly paycheck!

Let's not forget knowing Javascript is also a plus as well and is more desireable, IMHO, then knowing Flash!

Hope this helps shed some light for you?

Ray
Reply:You should focus on both and do the best you can to learn both. Therein lies the greater potential if you can use the power of both together. I've tried to be a good web developer first and they always ask me about actionscript. So, I'm trying to figure it out as well. I know html, css, xml with xsl, javascript, php, mysql, and flash.
Reply:Let me get straight: you want to move from printing to web. If you want to build a website, you must know what kind of site you will build, like a portfolio or e-commerce? If its a portfolio, you must specify further, e.g. who is your target audience—singer, photographer, company portfolio has different audiences. Then you decide what tools you need to develop it. The tools are Flash, HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc,, and most likely a combination of them. Looking this way, your question is not correct because it is not between Flash and Others. It is a "web knowledge" that you must grasp. And the key point is how long will you grasp these knowledge and "knowhows", let count it for Flash, CSS, HTML and PHP—as a printing man, I guess you didn't have background of any programming language. Add this to your age, is it worth for career turn?

Your question might be correct if It means that you will learn Flash to start as a specialist in multimedia presentation for a company, a seminar, or creating visual backdrop for a wedding. You don't need to learn that much.

So consider wisely.

How much should I charge for making a web site?

Hi,

there's a company I know that needs a web site for internal use.

I already made the requirements (with the help of someone I know from inside the company) and determined that the web site would have 7 modules, each containing 3 php files on average.

Now, I'll have to do their mysql database (installation, design and optimisation) as well php code for the server side and javascript on the client side for dynamic pages.

I plan to do the look myself (html, css, photoshop edited pictures).

I also plan to provide them a specification and design document as well (for mutual understanding and to facilitate maintenance later on).

Now, I'm about to bring them a proposal (the requirement document and a pricetag for the project), but I when I do, I know that they'll probably compare whatever offer I make them against that of a couple of web development companies.

So my question is: in your estimation, how much would a web development company charge for this?

How much should I charge for making a web site?
Well best way to charge for website

1). Hourly charges like its 12 weeks simply multply your rate with hour you spend on website.

2).Functionality of your website will be important factor

3). Technologies you have used.

like you used Mysql which is free so you dun charge bomb from them, cos you never know when they come back to you.

4).One of important factor is No. of webpages and how long you been able to satisfy their needs.

5).Maintanence ,if they ask for regular maintenace you got to consider that too.Charge them extra money for these kinda services

You can always charge for a webapplication on these basis.

hope this will solve your issues

Cheers:)
Reply:search the web for freelancer salaries

in Germany, a web freelancer would charge between 30 € and 60 € per hour. if you're writing just html/css code, then i guess it's around 30 €, but for complex php and database programming, you're moving towards 60 €.

but things will most likely be different in your country.
Reply:extimate the number of hours you need to build this, multiply by your hour-price.

here europe web companies will charge for hour-price here 50 ~ 80 - euros/ hour, freer-lancer like you 30 ~ 80 / hour.

Make sure you have on paper what you will deliver be as precise as possible.
Reply:im not good at charging either

but that project sounds kinda long, for about 12 weeks or so , for that I'd ask for at least 3k dlls

What do I need to learn to be a top notch Web Developer?

I'm very interested in the web development field and I've been researching HTML, DHTML, XHTML, XML, ASP, CSS and some other technologies but I'm not sure which are the best for when I graduate college.

My question, to clarify, is what technologies should I really beef up in order to be marketable as an atleast Junior Web Developer upon graduation?

I just have one problem, my school does not have a web development track so I am tacking the programming track and learning COBOL, Java, C++ and some VB...

Thanks for any suggestions!

OH, and as I side note, I'm very interested in Java techs like JSP and such so I may want to emphasize those skills.

What do I need to learn to be a top notch Web Developer?
My suggestion is that you learn at least one web programming language. (ASP/ColdFusion/PHP,etc.), Learn how yo connect your pages to databases such as Access or SQL, learn how to use javascript for menu building and client-side error checking, and get in with a decent web designer. You will also want to be familiar with CSS and how to manage and edit domain name registrars. You should also know how Flash works and how to integrate. To be honest with you, NOTHING takes the place of real world experience but at least being familiar with these things will get you foot in the door a s JR. web guy. Good Luck.
Reply:Consider the page your question appears on uses HTML, DHTML, XML, AND CSS.

Doesn't use XHTML because html and xhtml are mutually exclusive.

Page must also use backend programming though I doubt asp since thats for MS Windows

I'm 19 and struggling in college, no friends, no job, no ambition. All I feel like doing is web development..

I'm 19 years old with no ambition whatsoever. I'm on my 2nd year of college, which should mean I'm halfway through, but I'm not...I'm still in the pre-courses due to my horrible grades in high school. I'm starting to think college isn't for me. My parents seem to think the only job out there is in a medical field, which is not where I see myself. I have no friends to hang out with, no goals, no ambitions. All I do is wake up, go to class, come home and do web development. I've tried finding countless jobs, even at places I would not want to work, but no one hires me. They all say they want experience, but how do I get experience when no one hires me? I feel like I'm just going no where in life. I need something that can get me making money or motivate me. Raleigh, NC is the dullest state here, no web development firms hardly here, no nothing. I just want to die and get it over with. ;(.

I'm 19 and struggling in college, no friends, no job, no ambition. All I feel like doing is web development..
Go out there and do what you REALLY want to do. If it means moving to go to a school that has web dev. classes, then go!

Medical field? Ha! I've tried and tried to get into nursing after having a degree, a great GPA and grades, and five year hospital experience, and guess what? It's gotten me nowhere! They say they need people but then they make it so gosh darn hard to get it! So I finally realized after years of agony on myself that nursing is not for me. I just don't like the work, people are so stressed in the hospital, the hours suck...I mean, who would want someone who's worked 13 hours giving them medicine? I've always loved business, and so that is what I'm pursuing!

And a job? Dude, don't worry, keep trying and someone WILL hire you! I eventually got one and I really didn't think I would! It's way less than the hospital, but it's about business and it's a great learning tool for what I love and am pursuing.

So, you do have friends and u know it. Call em up and go out. Stop wasting time and do what ur really good at. Stop being depressed and just go out there and do it!! This is 2008, a new year, a new you! You can do it and don't let anything stop you!!! Good luck and best wishes with everything!!!! :)

And by the way, if u wanna make a lil xtra money, just sell ANYTHING on ebay. You'd be surprised what people buy. Your junk is someone else's treasure. That's how I make xtra cash. Also, if ur good at something, tell people you can do it for them and then charge them, like: fix a car, change a car's oil, fix a computer, clean a room, bake a cake, whatever xtra thing you're good at, put it to good use and make some money off of it. People would rather pay someone to do something for them! Anyway, you're young, healthy, put your mind to use, and you can achieve anything!
Reply:You're very welcome. I hate to hear people struggling because I know they have it in them to keep moving forward. Life is precious. Be strong and good luck :) Report It

Reply:c'mon, dude. Wake up and have some fun.

College should be one of the best experiences of your life. Who gives a crap if they are hiring web designers or teachers or garbage collectors.

get a grip. Do some web design on your own! Even I can do it and I learned at the age of 50! I suck at web design but I'm very good at SEO and web sales.

Most everyone has gone through some down times like you.

You are unique but not in that way. Enjoy.

Am Graphic designer I have 5 year experience. I want to grow in web development area how ca I do?

I am Graphic designer I have 5 year experience. I want to grow in web development area how ca I do. Please suggest me.

Thanks

Am Graphic designer I have 5 year experience. I want to grow in web development area how ca I do?
firstly you have to gain experience in HTML then you have to learn some script languages like java Script or CSS.

after that might you learn XML, XSLT, PHP, MySQL and so one.

Finally you should OOP languages like Java or C+

But it will be recommended to begin with HTML.
Reply:now learn HTML %26amp; DHTML

after that u can choose either of following:

1)Asp,Asp.Net(Mostly used for web appl.)

2)JAVA,Adv.Java(Servelets)+some Script Languages (Vb script,java script...etc.,);

I choose u to go for choice "1" if u have less logical thinking

I choose u to go for choice "2" if u have very good logical thinking

and better implementation of codes

because in Asp.net we have less coding part, easy to understand and implement, reliable(less efficeint than Java)

to learn java u must have through grip on OOPs concepts More coding and Logics(More Efficient than any Other sometimes)

Employees needed to work from distance in web development issues?
try out orkut and yahoogroup forums..you mught find people interested in the same work that you might have on mind!
Reply:Be very careful on this. I just had a customer that hired a company in India to work on his web site because the price they charged was so much less. After three months of paying them and getting vague reports on the work that they had done, and no apparent improvement in his commercial web site he fired them. Not having experience at this he did not disable their account or even change the password. They did a real number on his server! When you deal with off shore companies you need to take great pains to ensure the work is being done, and they have absolutely no more access to your site than is absolutely needed. If they fail to perform there is not a whole lot you can do.

What are client-server and web-based architecture in software development?

In simple words, Client-Server means that one part of the software acts as a server - typically non-visual application seating somewhere in a big black box that takes requests from and _serves_ results to clients (hence the term "server"). Clients are typically desktop programs talking to those server.

For example, when you get money from ATM machine at the bank, ATM machine usually runs client program that talks to bank's server.

Using Outlook (client) to get/send mail from mail server is another example.

Web-based architecture these days usually means that all or most interaction of users with the system is performed via web interface - i.e. they use their web browsers to talk to the application which seats on the web server, whereas what is going on internally on the server is usually not known to us.

Good examples of purely web-based applications are Yahoo services such as Yahoo Answers or Yahoo Mail. Sometimes such applications offer web-based services intended not only for humans, but for other programs - like for example Google Maps - they have APIs that let your programs use their services via web interface.

The difference between the two is often blurred, though. Web browing itself is an example client-server technology, where browser is a client and the web server is well, a server.

Is it still a good time to start a Web Design business?

I'll be graduating at the end of this year, from my web design and web development courses. Is it still a good time to start a web design business? And is it realistic to aim to earn £100K per year from web design and web development?

Is it still a good time to start a Web Design business?
I started doing business as a webdesigner before I left school and now have people on a "waiting-list" to use my services. I have been working alone since I started, taking advantage of the full financial benefits but now have reached a point where I simply do not have enough time to cope with the business on my own so have employed three new people to assist me, a photographer and graphic designer, and another two web programmers, one of which also doubles up and works competently with flash. There are other webconsultant/designer/programmers working in my area but there is still plenty of business for us all to have.

I think if customers like what they get they will pay for it, competition is high but I still manage to find plenty of business in this area of work.

I would say get out and go for it, give it what you have and it will sort itself out...once you have a good reputation the business will come flowing!

Hope my advice helps.
Reply:i think yes, but to many companies are in already, u have to come with something new..... make a competition search ;) most customers choose companies locally....

I need to create 5 pages for my web development class...so far I have one. How do I create more than 1 page?

Open your one page in Notepad or your web-editor and then save it as "page2.html".

Then save it again as "page3.html", "page4.html", "page5.html" - and now you have 5 seperate pages.

You can then edit each of these seperately, as 5 seperate pages.

Now you need to link them together:

You can either create the links in your web-editor or you will need to add the following code to each page (somewhere suitable):

%26lt;a href="name of first page.html" target="_self"%26gt;Home%26lt;/a%26gt;

%26lt;a href="page2.html" target="_self"%26gt;Page 2%26lt;/a%26gt;

%26lt;a href="page3.html" target="_self"%26gt;Page 3%26lt;/a%26gt;

%26lt;a href="page4.html" target="_self"%26gt;Page 4%26lt;/a%26gt;

%26lt;a href="page5.html" target="_self"%26gt;Page 5%26lt;/a%26gt;

This will be your menu / navigation system for your 5-page site and will allow a user to visit all the pages.

Note: You will have to change the first link to ask for the name of your first page (whatever you have already called it).

Are qualifications important for a web developer to get work?

I am thinking of doing a 5000 dollar diploma in web development but am wondering if I would be just as successful at finding a job if I self-learn web development. Please explain your answers

Are qualifications important for a web developer to get work?
In many situations - probably all small shop operations - I think if you can demonstrate skills and competency that no one cares about if you have a diploma in web dev or not.

However, the minute you go to a large company you have to compete just at the resume and job application stage to even get an interview. In those situations you might find that the competent self taught person's resume never gets to the top of the pile.

A degree tells an employer that you are teachable and can complete what you start. So with the big company the degree will carry more weight and may be the foothold you need to get in the front door.
Reply:If you apply for jobs in corporate firms , they may ask you to furnish them with your academic qualifications and experience.

You may find jobs in private firms. If you prove your ability,

you may be successful. Private firms also pay handsome

What can be patented in online web development?
You need to specify exactly what you mean, most codes are a form of language and cannot be copy written, however, a program's name could be, which will include the images used to design it, as well as the program itself. However, if someone decides to make their own version its not illegal, as long as they use their own codes and their own graphics.

What is good package for web application development..?

I am comfortable with with JavaSevlets and Jsp.. Is it good for actual development( in terms of afforts(cost, time) and size of team) .. Or me should go for other technologies(like DotNET ,PHP or other).. Please tell what are the technologies which are being concert as the robust one

What is good package for web application development..?
Well, the answer to your question is 'it depends'. There are many great choices for web application development. If you are looking to become a contractor or employee in a company here are the technologies typically used. I work for a Fortune 100 company and will respond based on that.

By far the single most popular development done for small to medium size businesses is using PHP. It is a great language to know if you are trying to find work for small, medium and some large websites. However, large companies my tend to shy away from PHP due to support and licensing. For example, my company does not allow PHP in the Enterprise.

If you are looking to work for a large consulting firm then learning Java/J2EE or .NET would be great. Large corporations favor environments like these because of the support, tools and enterprise robustness.

Given that there is a rise of new web technology such as Python that is growing but not adopted widely yet.

Frankly, there are many great choices, but if you choose PHP, .NET or Java/J2EE you should be in great shape for the future.

I hope that helps!
Reply:It depends on what you know and what do you need to accomplish. Each of PHP, .NET, Java, Ruby/Python(Django) has it's own advantages and disadvantages.

Java is popular specially in big business as it scales nicely but I personally dislike Java because they've complicated it too much. Thought, I don't have much experience with it.

ASP.NET is excellent but has the licensing issue. Your clients will usually need to use Microsoft's server software and it increases $$$ they will need to pay.

Ruby/Python(Django) are also excellent and their philosophy is refreshing but are less popular and you will find little harder web hosting for them (specially for Django) but it's not a problem in dedicated environment.

PHP is well known programming language. Supported almost everywhere, it's scales as much as Java, and you have some pretty good web frameworks for it, I like the most and use CodeIgniter.

So, on the end it depends on your personal preference and your goals mostly.

Hope this helps a little.

Which is the best popular technologies for web development?

the client side and the sever side ,thanx

Which is the best popular technologies for web development?
CLIENT-SIDE

- HTML and xHTML - extremely easy

- XML - extremely easy

- Javascript - takes some time to learn but easy after you master the syntax, similar syntax to PHP, Java, etc.

- Cascading Styel Sheets (CSS) - easy

- AJAX - combination of Javascript and XML, must have a solid understanding of Javascript

SERVER-SIDE

- PHP (open-source) - somewhat easy to learn

- Adobe ColdFusion - very easy to learn

- Microsoft ASP.Net - must know how to program in Visual Basic.Net or C# (very similar to Java)

- Ruby on Rails

- Python

- Java (JSP) - not a lot of developers coding in this language outside of enterprises, the syntax is similar to C# and PHP but it has a very powerful API and can be resource (server) intensive

DATABASE

- SQL - fairly easy...but pretty much a must with any server-side language

- Oracle - very similar to SQL with some subtle differences

Best wishes. :0)
Reply:The free and most easiest to learn is PHP/MySQL.

The more sofisticated one + more costly .NET

The most powerfull but could be too powerful is JSP.

Are qualifications required for web developers to get a job or is simple software knowledge enough?

I am thinking of doing a diploma in web development, but am wondering will I need to for an entry level job. Could I teach myself web development and showcase some of my work to an employer and this be enough. Just wanting some opinions.

Will I be wasting my time by doing a diploma in web development?

Are qualifications required for web developers to get a job or is simple software knowledge enough?
A diploma is seldomly a waste of time. Understand that while every employer is different, and there are no laws mandating a degree, most employers will require one unless you have an abundance of relevant experience. You could teach yourself, but where would you work to gain experience to offset the need for the degree? Additionally, a degree is transferrable, is seldomly questioned, and lasts forever where your experience may be questioned especially if it's through an internship or working for yourself and if it isn't recent it may not be accepted.

Best/creative ways to get customers (cheaply) for web development business?

I work for a small yet top-heavy (I have 3 bosses - and the company is only 7 employees including them) marketing services firm as a web developer. I have various skills %26amp; experience including design and programming. I am frustrated at how much money I generate for the company yet how little I get paid, so am seriously considering starting my own firm that would provide web development and mobile development services. I've got some clients already due to side projects, but am nervous about generating enough work to stay afloat especially having a wife %26amp; 2 young kids at home. Really I'm not dependent on my current employer for anything besides salary, especially given the fact that we already pay for our own (expensive) health insurance. I've always wanted to start my own company and am feeling that now is the time. We're already poor, so how much worse could it be. :-)

My question is, what would be some creative, effective, yet cheap ways to generate some business for myself?

Best/creative ways to get customers (cheaply) for web development business?
I've been doing web sites and web design/ programming for the past year. I've been in the industry for the past 11 years (making a lot of money for other people). Marketing my skill set on Craigslist has been highly effective.

You can go about it several different ways.

1)You can post your resume. But you will end up with full-time job offers if you do this.

2) you can post your skills in either creative services or computer services

3) you can set up an rss feed in your area of expertise and respond to jobs as they come on the posting board daily.

I would also recommend setting up a simple web page that lists your skills and has portfolio samples of your work. I began the year in need of work, now I have much more than I can take on. Good luck!

the following is my very simple portfolio page. I would recommend something similar. I think designers have the tendency to go overboard. http://www.utahstories.com/about_markosi...
Reply:There are very many cheap advertising on the net. You can try free classifieds. (Try a Google search for "free classifieds" or "free classifieds india".)

Or become a member of http://www.trafficswarm.com or http://www.ts25.com or http://www.webbizinsider.com (these sites generate tons of traffic to your site. Become a member of those sites. You can promote your business worldwide)

More traffic means more business. However, I am of the idea that free classifieds would work better. Once you make some money, then go for Premium Ad on the very same classified.

What's hot right now, Visual Basic, Java or Web Development?

i prefer the combination of java and web development.

What's hot right now, Visual Basic, Java or Web Development?
Any field can be hot for you, if you become the master of that. Its true if you learn Java and web development then its good, but if you can do quality works with VB then it will also be hot, coz there is always need of quality works...
Reply:I would have to say Java and Web Development are hot. The field is crowded with VB developers.
Reply:I agree that all of them are pretty hot right now, and if you are really good at any language, chances are you will easily find a job. I would suggest thinking about what you like to do the most - whether it is hard core coding, or more design and layout stuff. If you are more into the hardcore stuff, then I would learn Java, VB, or C#. If you are more interested in doing web stuff, I would probably focus more on PHP, JavaScript, ASP, or other similar languages. If you are more interested in the design and appearance, you may want to pick up Flash programming. Or, if you are total geek (like me) and don't care to ever see humans (jk), you could even pick up database programming, like SQL, and flavors of it like PL/SQL, or T-SQL. The programming field is getting pretty hot again - I get multiple calls and emails every week on my resume' on CareerBuilder.
Reply:Out of those 3 it has to be Java. VB isn't used in too many professional applications and Web Development is actually done a lot of the time in Java. Also, the nice thing about Java is that once you learn it it's like knowing 3 languages. Anyone who understands Java should be able to transition back to C, C++, or C# without much trouble.

What makes the best web design / development company the best?

I would argue that the process a web design company takes and the skill sets of the people involved in that process is what makes a good web design company become the best. How long the company has been in business and the success it’s been able to bring to its clients, are equally important.

This is a an article I wrote on the subject of good web design and development process http://blog.9thsphere.com/blog/?p=18

What makes the best web design / development company the best?
Since 85% of Internet users rely on search engines to find goods and services, it is essential that every business promote their business via a published domain named website on major search engines such as Google.com, Yahoo.com %26amp; MSN.com. These major search engines are the Yellow Pages for all business which can be reached by anyone having an Internet connection.

Begin by publishing your website's domain name for FREE at Google's search directory, visit "http://google.com/addurl/?continue=/add... and fill-in the form. In another way, Google, Yahoo or MSN provide a Yellow Pages kind of advertisement for every website according to a set of ranking protocols. And there's where web designers and search engine optimizers play an critical role in marketing websites which in turn, display goods and services to be discovered [via search directories] by the rest of the world. The greater the appearance or presence that one's website can generate on search directories, the greater number of customers will accordingly visitor one's website.

As for the cost to market one's website via the Internet and more particularly -- search directories, will depend initially with the proper design of webpages and the proper placement of metatags which are: %26lt;Title%26gt;, %26lt;Description%26gt; and %26lt;Keywords%26gt;.

A searchable %26lt;Title%26gt; would be "[name of the goods/services - a generic domain name is okay unless you own a well-know brand], [city], [state - postal abbreviation]" -- up to 65 characters and spaces. The %26lt;Description%26gt; would be up to 20 words comprising a complete readable sentence which promotes interest in your business, i.e., "We sell quality _____ at a reasonable price, etc." And %26lt;keywords%26gt; would consist of 12-15 compound plural words separated by commas, i.e., "cars, planes, transportation, etc."

In conclusion, webpages can either be rather straightforward using only HTML text or be crafted totally as a graphic Flash configuration. Either way, care should be taken to complete the Properties entries for Title, Description and Keywords so that there is something that search robots can index. The more one is educated in crafting effective webpages along with metatag placement, the less will be spent to hire third-party consultants to assist you in this matter.

To demonstrate how search engines/directories work, go to Yahoo.com and type in the following search query: "pizza downtown los angeles." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query which means you want to order a "pizza" from "downtown" and in what city -- "Los Angeles." Sounds fairly simple and then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.3 million search results and among the top Five rankings will be a business called "Pizza Next Door, etc." The significance of this demonstration is to illustrate that most Interest shoppers will discover "Pizza Next Door," forthright because of its high web presence and ranking within the Top Five. So these shoppers are more or less likely to patronize this pizza establishment and hopefully in the long term; validate the owner and his family as having a profitable Internet enterprise.

To further illustrate how one can achieve a TOP 10 page ranking on Google.com, type in the following search query: "ecommerce tutorials seo." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query. Then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.44 million search results and among the TOP 10 rankings will be a website called "Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles."

Good luck!

Looking for Online Web Design & Development (IT) Programs offering Bachelors and Masters?

I am a professional working full-time, therefore a brick and mortar school is out of the question. I often work late hours and need to find a regionally accredited university offering a bachelors degree in web development and design. I would like to eventually obtain a master's degree in this particular area of IT, however, I have heard some not so good things about Kaplan University. I recently had a bad experience with an admissions advisor and would like to know if anyone knows of a brick and mortar school that has an online degree program in the above referenced areas of interest. I have been searching for months and thought Kaplan was my best choice but I would like to know if there are other options available before going further in debt. Please keep in mind that I already have a BA degree from MU in Missouri.

Looking for Online Web Design %26amp; Development (IT) Programs offering Bachelors and Masters?
Kaplan is a good one.Don't care about what people say. I am getting my master's degree online. Talk to an admissions advisor from Kaplan. They are very nice and they will help you out. They won't bother you again if you say no. I guarantee you. You can even do an online chat with an advisor from theri website. Good luck!

No export license is required. However,it can be governed by RBI regulations as above. And if the Unit wants to avail income tax sops it may have to work as STPI/SEZ Unit.Refer to www.allindiantaxes.com for details

Reply:You will need to look to the US-India tax treaty. Generally the US will impose an income tax on earnings that arise from US businesses; however, in many cases this tax requires a physical presence or "branch" to be in the US. The question then is whether your computer servers can be considered a US presence (or, alternatively, if you are actually in the US for any part of the year).... To answer that you need to look to your operations, to see what activities you conduct here (as set out in the treaty).

Your clients may have to withhold applicable taxes from payments to you in some circumstances (again, read the treaty).

As for a sales tax, these laws vary from state to state. Generally you do not have to pay these taxes to states as long as your operations are 100% online (the federal government has imposed a moratorium on internet taxes).

The best solution is to hire a US accountant to tell you exactly what you need to do. You can probably find someone do provide this service for next to nothing.

Im learning Web Development...maybe??

i have been doing website stuff for a while, basically just from spending 100's hours on my pc. Ive read HTML books and many more. All the stuff i find tells me how to do stuff but dosent really explain why it all works! They say its a "mark up" languages, but never explain what that is, whats a framework?, whats syntax?, what are javascript libraries? These are some of the things i want to learn to have a solid foundation in web development. 9 out of 10 times i can get things to work, but i dont know why they work! Can i get opinions on wheres the best place to START! Basically i need step 1. Thanks.

Im learning Web Development...maybe??
Its sad to hear, that you have allready done the same mistake, as i did when i first started out.

Reading books on certain topics can be a good thing, however when it comes to web-design, it is a complete waste of time, why? Well its simple really, you would want the copy/paste function anabled.

Typing in all the different examples in the books by hand, can take quite some time; having the copy/paste function at your disposal, will allow you to focus your time on more important stuff.

---MarkUp---

Is pretty much self-explanatory, in that it means "marked up stuff", you will "mark up stuff", and you apply style to it through CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

---Syntax---

Is basically the "rules" of a language. PHP for instance; get the syntax wrong, and the code most likely won't work.

For instance, if you don't understand Danish, and i suddenly started speaking Danish to you, thrat wouldn't get my point through, unless you where somehow blessed in the moment now, would it?

---libraries---

These are like a collection of pre-made functions and such, which should (and usually will), make it easier, and faster to develop applications and/or websites, you can even make your own libraries.

---Website's---

Below i've inserted some websites for you to read, understanding how things work, and why they work, comes with experiance, the more experiance you gather, the more you understand how things work.

Web development is a broad term that incorporates all areas of developing a Web site for the World Wide Web. This can include graphical Web design, actual coding of pages, backend programming, and Web server configuration. However, among web professionals, Web development usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building Web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding.

How to install SVN for web development (dev sites/live sites)?

I was looking into installing subversioning onto my linux dedicated server. I do web development on it and would like to not only use the box as a central repository, but also set it up so that from that repository, I can easily move content to a development sites as well as live sites.

Basically the development sites would be mirrors of the final committed files in the repository. Then the live sites would be updated to reflect the content of the development sites when triggered somehow.

Any tips on the best way to do this? I already have SVN installed on my server. Just need to know the next steps to get things set up.

How to install SVN for web development (dev sites/live sites)?
Look into using SVN hooks to do the dirty work.

have your website root be a checkout of your repository - then after you have a good change that you want to move to live commit it to the repository and the SVN hook for post-commit can run an update on the website root which will update your live site.

Make sure the perms of your website root and the svn repo are the same as the user your are running as, also not root

What do you suggest : leanring web development or computer programming ?

Hi , my question has two parts , first part is :

between software programming ( developing computer softwares ) and web developing .. what do you suggest to learn depending on :

* Time needed to master the chosen one.

* Market need for the chosen one.

* income expected from the chosen one.

Second part :

I really really LOVE web development , but I felt into this maze because I don't see much to expect from working as a web developer .. Do web developers work only on their computers !! or they have to attend a company at the early morning like all empolyees ..!!

the real question- for this part - is : what path should I follow to master web developing and related technologies ( like security , I think it can help ,and Oracle database ..etc %26lt;%26lt; important to answer please :) %26lt;%26lt; I meant , the related technologies )

Thank you !! :)

What do you suggest : leanring web development or computer programming ?
There's potentially more money in application programming than web-based programming. However, there are potentially more job opportunities in web-based programming.

I would say, maintain as wide a skillset as possible, but focus on what you prefer - seems to be web-based programming.

Good luck.
Reply:I would learn one first, in your case...I would get web design down. There are typically more web engineer/development jobs than software engineer. Either one can probably "work from home" but its up to the company, not you. Some of the main highlights of websites I have seen have utilized: php, sql, asp and so on. You dont see many company/corporate sites use just html anymore. HTML is almost a thing of the past as new features on the web start getting used.

I would then focus on software programming, depending on what language you are using (Im a VB guy), you can probably find something good job wise depending on what you use and your knowledge level. Sometimes you have to be able to make a software program access web databases so you need to know the both of best worlds!

Which monitor should I buy for Web Development? Samsung 30" or 2 x Hanns-G 28"?

I am looking at purchasing a monitor(s):

1. 30" Samsung SyncMaster 305T with 2560x1600 Resolution

$1230 + $25 Shipping = $1255

vs

2. 2 x 28" Hanns-G 281DPB with 1920x1200 x 2 = 3840 x 1200 Total Resolution

$500 (shipping free) x 2 monitors = $1000

My main purpose is for Web Development, dealing mainly with Web Programming, Graphics (Photoshop) / Animations (Flash), and a little Audio/Video.

I know that If I get the 30" I can maximize the Code Pages longer from 1200 (28" monitor) to 1600 (30") Resolution.

But De,aling with Graphics %26amp; Audio/Video I can can benefit from using 2x28" monitor to give me 3840 (width) resolution vs 2560 (width) on a 30" monitor.

Please help me decide, which to buy. Thanks

Is the quality of web development comparable if I outsourced it to India or some other country outside the US?

I need to get a website developed and someone recommended using Guru.com or Rentacoder.com. They seem to be far cheaper, but I'm not sure if they can do a competent job. Also, I'm on a very limited budget. That's why I'm seriously contemplating getting it developed outside the US. Any advice or experience with this?

Is the quality of web development comparable if I outsourced it to India or some other country outside the US?
My associate specializes in this sort of field, he can do your website in a short amount of time. He likes to move quickly, 30% down payment, 7-10 day turnaround. He does a magnificent job for much less then standard web developers, his work in my opinion is brilliant and is not that expensive.

If you are serious about this I can send you his contact information, and he can get on the job right away. Let me know.

Send me an email, with your answer.

I hope we can help you resolve this quickly, Good Luck.
Reply:User Rent A Coder because you don' t pay until yo are 100% satisfied wid the work being done.... Right now I'm getting my site redesigned using RAC because I don't have the time... and I'm not even paying $25.
Reply:First of all never pay any freelancer afront. Pay only after job is completed and you are satisfied with the work. Check freelance websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/
Reply:I myself is a web developer.

I suggest don't go through any sites, as they are far more costlier. As compared to these sites, its better to search for a web developer on your own via contacts. Or you can put on a free Ad on the web.

As compared to other countries, I feel India has good number of web developers who work from offshore (as part-time) which actually makes them work for cheap.
Reply:All depends on what functionality you want or need in your website. I expect a simple, good looking site can be created by just about anybody.

But, I've personally had poor experiences with offshore work. I've seen abominable code vulnerable to common SQL injection attacks, I've seen mistakes like not enclosing in quotes resulting in labels becoming executable code, more.

In all those cases, stuff "works" but I've either sent the project back to be re-done or advised others of numerous really bad flaws which may not be apparent to a non-technical person but is juicy to a hacker looking to compromise the website.

Are you a do-it-yourselfer? If you are, what would you think about building your own website by simply snapping in code others have created for cheap or free? And if you could change the appearance of an entire website simply by applying a "theme" with a click?

If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, check out any of the ready-made portal frameworks... like Dotnetnuke, Drupal, Rainbow, etc.

If you'd like to see what you can do to customize your website, check out the many choices available at http://www.snowcovered.com
Reply:I'm sure you get excellent quality, but possibly poor support. And many Americans boycott out of country outsourcing.

Studying Web Design and Web Development?

Can I study in the US both together or do I have to finish one and later start the other?

I want to study a bachelor of both but I don't know if I have to study 4 years of web design and later 4 years of web development or both at the same time. I don't mind waiting 8 years but I don't know if is possible to study both in just 4 years. I don't want to study an associate's degree.

I have never done a website before (I always try to but never knew much) but I just love looking at different websites everyday and their designs and I always have ideas of how I want to do mine too and this is what I want to do as my future career.

I want to design websites plus controlling where the next page will go after you click an images (I think that's what a web developer do). ^ ^

For those that studied both, what did you do?

**I'm not good being creative when I draw (but I'm good at looking!). Do I have to study an asso/bache of arts before I study both?

Please help me and thanks!

Studying Web Design and Web Development?
Currently I am working on a bachelor's degree for IT/Web Design. Because Web Design isn't a big degree plan, most schools don't offer a bacherlor's in Web Design only. (that's what I was trying to do at first).

Right now, web design and web development are intertwined into my degree plan. There are many many schools that do this.

Someone mentioned above that there are many sites that teach this in just a few months. That is true, however, that's only really good if you want to freelance. Most businesses are asking for atleast a bachelor's degree now to design for them.

I have to tell you that I like taking IT as well. It makes web design easier to learn. There are many different areas of computers that are incorporated with Web Design that if you do find a school that offers web design only courses, you are at a disadvantage.

Some of my previous IT classes have been programming and advanced programming languages. This helps so so much when working with some web design techniques.

Really, you get what you pay for when you go to school for both.

If you want to try some online classes at a University I recommend Kaplan University or University of Phoenix. Both schools offer bachelor's degrees in IT/web design.

♥ Happy Designing!
Reply:You sound like you really want to do this but I'm afraid that it might be boring for you.

Web Developers have to know the most common languages in use to day they would be...

Databases like Oracle or SQL(My, Portage, Lite, etc).

Scripting languages like PHP, Ruby, Perl, ASP, etc...

Markup Languages like HTML, XHTML, WML, SXL, etc

In order to be a good designer you need to know how to work with the above languages.

There isn't alot of drawing in web development cause there will always come a time when you have to put aside programs like DreamWeaver or NVU and code by hand to achieve the desired results.

About the part on finding work...

There are a lot of people doing web design so trying to find a job is difficult. You can either work for a company and be told to do a site or go freelance and then wait for work to come.

I didn't mention all the hacking you will have to be doing to achieve browser compatibility.

I don't know about degrees cause I'm self taught but 4 years for all this junk is a waste of money in my opinion. You can learn everything there is to learn online.
Reply:there are many free sites that will teach you both web design and web development in a few months not years
Reply:Just go to a local community college and learn there, it will save you money compared to a 4 year school and you'll learn just as much if not more.

Here is a book that can help you learn the basics.
