Are qualifications required for web developers to get a job or is simple software knowledge enough?

I am thinking of doing a diploma in web development, but am wondering will I need to for an entry level job. Could I teach myself web development and showcase some of my work to an employer and this be enough. Just wanting some opinions.

Will I be wasting my time by doing a diploma in web development?

A diploma is seldomly a waste of time. Understand that while every employer is different, and there are no laws mandating a degree, most employers will require one unless you have an abundance of relevant experience. You could teach yourself, but where would you work to gain experience to offset the need for the degree? Additionally, a degree is transferrable, is seldomly questioned, and lasts forever where your experience may be questioned especially if it's through an internship or working for yourself and if it isn't recent it may not be accepted.

Best/creative ways to get customers (cheaply) for web development business?

I work for a small yet top-heavy (I have 3 bosses - and the company is only 7 employees including them) marketing services firm as a web developer. I have various skills %26amp; experience including design and programming. I am frustrated at how much money I generate for the company yet how little I get paid, so am seriously considering starting my own firm that would provide web development and mobile development services. I've got some clients already due to side projects, but am nervous about generating enough work to stay afloat especially having a wife %26amp; 2 young kids at home. Really I'm not dependent on my current employer for anything besides salary, especially given the fact that we already pay for our own (expensive) health insurance. I've always wanted to start my own company and am feeling that now is the time. We're already poor, so how much worse could it be. :-)

My question is, what would be some creative, effective, yet cheap ways to generate some business for myself?

Best/creative ways to get customers (cheaply) for web development business?
I've been doing web sites and web design/ programming for the past year. I've been in the industry for the past 11 years (making a lot of money for other people). Marketing my skill set on Craigslist has been highly effective.

You can go about it several different ways.

1)You can post your resume. But you will end up with full-time job offers if you do this.

2) you can post your skills in either creative services or computer services

3) you can set up an rss feed in your area of expertise and respond to jobs as they come on the posting board daily.

I would also recommend setting up a simple web page that lists your skills and has portfolio samples of your work. I began the year in need of work, now I have much more than I can take on. Good luck!

the following is my very simple portfolio page. I would recommend something similar. I think designers have the tendency to go overboard. http://www.utahstories.com/about_markosi...
Reply:There are very many cheap advertising on the net. You can try free classifieds. (Try a Google search for "free classifieds" or "free classifieds india".)

Or become a member of http://www.trafficswarm.com or http://www.ts25.com or http://www.webbizinsider.com (these sites generate tons of traffic to your site. Become a member of those sites. You can promote your business worldwide)

More traffic means more business. However, I am of the idea that free classifieds would work better. Once you make some money, then go for Premium Ad on the very same classified.

What's hot right now, Visual Basic, Java or Web Development?

i prefer the combination of java and web development.

What's hot right now, Visual Basic, Java or Web Development?
Any field can be hot for you, if you become the master of that. Its true if you learn Java and web development then its good, but if you can do quality works with VB then it will also be hot, coz there is always need of quality works...
Reply:I would have to say Java and Web Development are hot. The field is crowded with VB developers.
Reply:I agree that all of them are pretty hot right now, and if you are really good at any language, chances are you will easily find a job. I would suggest thinking about what you like to do the most - whether it is hard core coding, or more design and layout stuff. If you are more into the hardcore stuff, then I would learn Java, VB, or C#. If you are more interested in doing web stuff, I would probably focus more on PHP, JavaScript, ASP, or other similar languages. If you are more interested in the design and appearance, you may want to pick up Flash programming. Or, if you are total geek (like me) and don't care to ever see humans (jk), you could even pick up database programming, like SQL, and flavors of it like PL/SQL, or T-SQL. The programming field is getting pretty hot again - I get multiple calls and emails every week on my resume' on CareerBuilder.
Reply:Out of those 3 it has to be Java. VB isn't used in too many professional applications and Web Development is actually done a lot of the time in Java. Also, the nice thing about Java is that once you learn it it's like knowing 3 languages. Anyone who understands Java should be able to transition back to C, C++, or C# without much trouble.

What makes the best web design / development company the best?

I would argue that the process a web design company takes and the skill sets of the people involved in that process is what makes a good web design company become the best. How long the company has been in business and the success it’s been able to bring to its clients, are equally important.

This is a an article I wrote on the subject of good web design and development process http://blog.9thsphere.com/blog/?p=18

What makes the best web design / development company the best?
Since 85% of Internet users rely on search engines to find goods and services, it is essential that every business promote their business via a published domain named website on major search engines such as Google.com, Yahoo.com %26amp; MSN.com. These major search engines are the Yellow Pages for all business which can be reached by anyone having an Internet connection.

Begin by publishing your website's domain name for FREE at Google's search directory, visit "http://google.com/addurl/?continue=/add... and fill-in the form. In another way, Google, Yahoo or MSN provide a Yellow Pages kind of advertisement for every website according to a set of ranking protocols. And there's where web designers and search engine optimizers play an critical role in marketing websites which in turn, display goods and services to be discovered [via search directories] by the rest of the world. The greater the appearance or presence that one's website can generate on search directories, the greater number of customers will accordingly visitor one's website.

As for the cost to market one's website via the Internet and more particularly -- search directories, will depend initially with the proper design of webpages and the proper placement of metatags which are: %26lt;Title%26gt;, %26lt;Description%26gt; and %26lt;Keywords%26gt;.

A searchable %26lt;Title%26gt; would be "[name of the goods/services - a generic domain name is okay unless you own a well-know brand], [city], [state - postal abbreviation]" -- up to 65 characters and spaces. The %26lt;Description%26gt; would be up to 20 words comprising a complete readable sentence which promotes interest in your business, i.e., "We sell quality _____ at a reasonable price, etc." And %26lt;keywords%26gt; would consist of 12-15 compound plural words separated by commas, i.e., "cars, planes, transportation, etc."

In conclusion, webpages can either be rather straightforward using only HTML text or be crafted totally as a graphic Flash configuration. Either way, care should be taken to complete the Properties entries for Title, Description and Keywords so that there is something that search robots can index. The more one is educated in crafting effective webpages along with metatag placement, the less will be spent to hire third-party consultants to assist you in this matter.

To demonstrate how search engines/directories work, go to Yahoo.com and type in the following search query: "pizza downtown los angeles." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query which means you want to order a "pizza" from "downtown" and in what city -- "Los Angeles." Sounds fairly simple and then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.3 million search results and among the top Five rankings will be a business called "Pizza Next Door, etc." The significance of this demonstration is to illustrate that most Interest shoppers will discover "Pizza Next Door," forthright because of its high web presence and ranking within the Top Five. So these shoppers are more or less likely to patronize this pizza establishment and hopefully in the long term; validate the owner and his family as having a profitable Internet enterprise.

To further illustrate how one can achieve a TOP 10 page ranking on Google.com, type in the following search query: "ecommerce tutorials seo." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query. Then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.44 million search results and among the TOP 10 rankings will be a website called "Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles."

Good luck!

Looking for Online Web Design & Development (IT) Programs offering Bachelors and Masters?

I am a professional working full-time, therefore a brick and mortar school is out of the question. I often work late hours and need to find a regionally accredited university offering a bachelors degree in web development and design. I would like to eventually obtain a master's degree in this particular area of IT, however, I have heard some not so good things about Kaplan University. I recently had a bad experience with an admissions advisor and would like to know if anyone knows of a brick and mortar school that has an online degree program in the above referenced areas of interest. I have been searching for months and thought Kaplan was my best choice but I would like to know if there are other options available before going further in debt. Please keep in mind that I already have a BA degree from MU in Missouri.

Looking for Online Web Design %26amp; Development (IT) Programs offering Bachelors and Masters?
Kaplan is a good one.Don't care about what people say. I am getting my master's degree online. Talk to an admissions advisor from Kaplan. They are very nice and they will help you out. They won't bother you again if you say no. I guarantee you. You can even do an online chat with an advisor from theri website. Good luck!

Reply:You will need to look to the US-India tax treaty. Generally the US will impose an income tax on earnings that arise from US businesses; however, in many cases this tax requires a physical presence or "branch" to be in the US. The question then is whether your computer servers can be considered a US presence (or, alternatively, if you are actually in the US for any part of the year).... To answer that you need to look to your operations, to see what activities you conduct here (as set out in the treaty).

Your clients may have to withhold applicable taxes from payments to you in some circumstances (again, read the treaty).

As for a sales tax, these laws vary from state to state. Generally you do not have to pay these taxes to states as long as your operations are 100% online (the federal government has imposed a moratorium on internet taxes).

The best solution is to hire a US accountant to tell you exactly what you need to do. You can probably find someone do provide this service for next to nothing.
