4 years ago I was in similar situation as yours, I was trying to find ways to earn some extra income on top of my day job as web designer.





The only thing I did at that time was going around to meet people and told them I was a web designer. Until one day, someone who did some photo-shooting for me, found out what I was doing and asked if I would help re-design her old web site and I took it up right away.





After I completed her site, she referred her other photographer partner to me, and then the new customer referred another friend, and the rest was history.





So my point here being: you need to go out and tell people what you do. It's that simple!





If you are a shy person (whom 98% of web developers happen to be), you could start by writing some nifty scripts and offer them in script repository sites for free, such as Hotscripts.com, Needscripts.com, Freshmeat.com etc.





That way, if people like your scripts and download to use it, they will contact you when they get into difficulty getting things to work, and many of times, they would not mind paying you money to fix them. That is how you can build up your rapport. It is one of the better ways to show people what you are capable of.





And the best part is, since you still have your day job, you have all the time in the world for you to develop your own script and still get the paycheck every end of the month.





Another thing you can do: which is also what I'm doing (and I'm giving it away for free), is to start looking around the web for some web designers' web site, find those that were not properly coded (such as without a proper contact form etc), and offer them your service to help them spruce up their web site with your scripting skill (if that is what you are good at).





Doing so, you may not get paid the first time, but have faith that the next time they get a freelance job, they will count you in for the scripting part (more than 70% of web designers out there are lack of scripting skills, many didn't even know HTML!)





So in summary, my friend, all you need to do is just stretch out your hand and tell the world about what you are doing. Money don't fall from sky, even if they did, you still need to do some running to reach for them and grab them. Good luck.

Bingo! They're right. But a lot of companies that tried outsourcing are bringing the work back in-house due to language problems and poorly written contracts that result in user dissatisfaction and cost overruns.

No, as long as you know your stuff. While a formal education is vital in the advancement of any job, someone who has worked with a programming language for years can be as adequate as someone who worked with it for years in school.





As far as your question with regards to being harder than web development, the answer is no. Actually, web development and computer programming are merging together quite quickly. Very few places setup a website without some sort of server-side programming language supporting it. Most of the sites you see today are written in PHP, ASP, Coldfusion or .NET. They then have scripts that can range from cgi to perl to Java and javascript.





All you have to do is put in the time and dedication to studying a programming language and you can get just as far. Don't be discouraged.

Neither is harder than the other. However I believe it is easier to find a job in web development rather than another development field due to the widespread of web applications.
